• KE029-256 Enclosure
  Description

  'The remains of this large enclosure are situated on sloping ground to the north of Tralee town. The location of the site affords excellent views to the west, south and east. It is now substantially overgrown, the northern half of the enclosure has been planted with trees in the last century, the eastern quadrant has been partially built on by tennis courts. Traces of the enclosing element survive in the south west quadrant, having an external height of 0.40m. No accurate measurement of the width of the bank can be gauged here as it is substantially overgrown. The interior has a dished appearance, in the centre of which is a mound of earth and stones, 9.00m in diameter and 1.20m in height, which now has large boulders dumped on top. These may have come from the construction of the nearby tennis courts. Part of the enclosing bank seems to survive in the trees to the north. Here a 6.00m wide bank, 0.50m high is traceable in the trees. It is very disturbed, and has a line of evergreen trees growing along the crest of the bank. Total dimensions of this enclosure are 149m E-W.' Compiled by Michael Connolly for the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as part of a survey of the Lee Valley area in 1996-97. • KE029-288 Excavation - miscellaneous
  Description

  'Monitoring of topsoil clearance associated with the second phase of development works at the site led to the identification of three areas of archaeological potential. Area 1 was in the vicinity of House Sites 14-16; it measured 30m east-west by 9m. Three features were identified: two pits (C.24 and C.9) and a linear ditch. The last appears to be a drainage ditch associated with the original estate gardens. The pit C.24 consists of two conjoined pits measuring 2.2m by 1m with a maximum depth of 0.3m. The pit was heavily truncated in the east by the excavation of a pipe-trench. The base of the pit was heat-altered, indicative of in situ burning. The other pit, C.9, was sub-oval in plan; three stakes were inserted into the base. Area II was in the vicinity of House Site 12; a single pit 1.4m by 1.45m was identified. The pit was relatively shallow, with a maximum depth of 0.26in. A flint scraper was retrieved from the fill. Area III was in the vicinity of House Site 43; a single elongated pit measuring 0.66m by 2.02m was identified. The fill of the pit consisted of heat-altered clay with inclusions of burnt bone and charcoal. The pit was not burnt in situ.'   Description

  Detached irregular-plan three-bay two-storey over raised platform Venetian Gothic Revival style house, built 1857-1860, with two-bay recessed bay having limestone ashlar box bay window to left, single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porte cochere to centre with trefoil-headed openings and single-bay two-storey advanced end bay to right with projecting canted bay window. Designed by William Atkins for Maurice Fitzgerald Sandes. Three-bay side elevations having single-bay full-height breakfront to south-east elevation with limestone ashlar flanking box bay windows. Seven-bay two-storey lateral wing to north-west elevation on a cruciform-plan with two-bay two-storey projecting bays to north-east and south-west elevations. Extended to south-east, c. 1925, comprising five-bay double-height red brick single-cell chapel return with lancet arch openings and single-bay full-height limestone ashlar polygonal apse. In use as convent, 1939. Now in use as school. Pitched and hipped intersecting slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, grouped brick chimneystack with limestone bands, and having cast-iron gutters, hoppers and square downpipes. Red brick English garden bond walls with limestone coved plinth, string courses, corner pilasters, projecting limestone cornice on brackets, and having inset crests and roundels. Ogee arch openings with alternating brick and limestone voussoirs. Cusped reveals to facades. Ashlar bay windows at ground floor. Trefoil-headed paired windows and timber one-over-one pane sliding sash windows with profiled limestone sills. Retaining interior features. Stable complex, built c. 1860, to north-west about a courtyard. Comprising detached five-bay two-storey limestone-built house retaining original aspect with door opening to centre having lancet arch relieving arch and segmental-headed openings to first floor. Attached five-bay single-storey limestone-built wing at right angles to south-west. Detached seven-bay single-storey limestone-built range retaining original aspect with segmental-headed door openings having lancet arch relieving arches and corrugated-iron roof. Gateway to stable courtyard comprising pair of red brick piers with iron gates. Terrace to garden front with brick and limestone walls and decorative urns and limestone steps. Garden converted to golf course.

  Description

  Remains of detached two-storey house, built c. 1720, with crow-stepped gable ends. In use in 1939, now ruinous. Pitched slate roof, partly replaced with corrugated-iron sheet. Gabled half-dormers to north wing. Rendered rubble stone walls to north wing. Rendered facade with rendered brick panelled pilasters. Limestone sills on fluted brackets to window openings. Replacement timber windows. Arched doorway at ground floor. Square-headed opening at first floor with external flight of stone steps. Stable complex, built c. 1825, to west about a courtyard comprising, detached six-bay single-storey stone-built range with half-attic having flight of external steps to first floor, now derelict. Detached three-bay single-storey parallel range with series of elliptical-headed integral carriage arches. Gateway to stable yard comprising pair of rendered piers with round-headed opening to centre and lateral screen wall connecting ranges. Set in the grounds of former Oak Park.
