Description
In pasture, on a N-facing slope. A subrectangular area (46m E-W; 42m N-S) enclosed by an earth and stone bank with external stone facing. There is a gap in the bank (Wth c. 2m) at the SE corner. The interior is raised slightly. The remains of a stone sheepfold occur in the SW corner. There is a suboval mound (H 0.55m; 22m N-S; 9m E-W) of earth and stone in the SW sector. A depression in the centre of the mound is the result of quarrying. Some unmarked headstones, the majority of which have fallen, are visible on the W side of the mound. A bullaun stone (KE057-050001-) and a broken rotary quern (diam. 0.75m; T 0.85m) were discovered within the mound material. According to local information, during the 1960s/70s people would visit the graveyard on the 1st November and throw a stone on the mound for every decade of the rosary said. Unbaptised babies and travellers are said locally to have been buried here. Three rectangular buildings are indicated within the graveyard on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. Description
In pasture, on a S-facing slope. A circular area (diam. 24m) defined by a flat-topped earthen bank (Wth 3.75m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.2m). Stone facing is evident on the internal face of the bank NW-NE. An external fosse (Wth 1.9m; D 0.15m) is visible along SE arc. The interior is raised (H 0.65m) above the external ground level to compensate for the hillslope. The N portion of the interior is covered with overgrowth. This rath is also the site of Kilnarovanagh Church (KE057-051002-). Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
- KE057-051002 Church
Description
In the 1940s it was recorded that the ruins of Kilnnrovanagh church were in a rath (KE057-051001-) on Buckley's land (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). There are no visible remains of a church in the rath, which is named 'Lisnarovanagh' on the 1895 OS 6-inch map. There is, however, another record from the 1940s which places Kilnarovanagh church on the land of Mr Buckley, opposite Faha School, though it was noted that the church was demolished and the 'stones removed and used in later churches' (ITA). Faha school is indicated, in Knocknagowna townland, on the 1895 OS 6-inch map and is c. 1.25km S of the rath.
