• KE058-051 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a SW-facing slope. A circular area (c. 30m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.35m; int. H 1.05m; ext. H 1m) which is incorporated into the field boundary system along the S arc. The bank is breached at E, SE, SW and WSW. The interior, which is level, appears to be raised on the W side to compensate for the hillslope. An E-W trackway extends from the breach in the bank in the SE arc to the breach at SW. A N-S lane tangentially abuts and cuts into the bank along the W arc, externally. This rath was recorded in the 1840s as being 'in the West end' of Knockacullig South (OSNB, Kilcummin, no. 2, 23). • KE059-002 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a S-facing slope. This rath is not visible at ground level. It is indicated as an oval enclosure (c. 35m N-S; c. 30m E-W) on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. It was described in the 1840s as a small rath, called 'Cockhill Fort', which was 'nearly defaced' and which was situated about 'five chains' NE of Cockhill Cottage (OSNB, Kilcummin, no. 3, 31). • KE059-034 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, at the upper edge of a SSE-facing slope. Remains of a circular area (dims. c. 26m NW-SE; c. 22m NE-SW) defined by a bank which is incorporated into a field boundary ESE->S->W->NW. Bank (Wth 4.35m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.5m) has intermittent cattle breaches ESE->S->SW and is best preserved (Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.3m) SW->NW; bank is levelled NW->N->ESE. Interior is generally level and is raised slightly at SSE to compensate for hillslope. Souterrain (KE059-034001-) is located off-centre to SSE. Barely traceable remains of very low, inner scarp (Wth 1.0m; H 0.2m) and a possible intervening fosse (basal Wth 0.5m; total Wth 2.6m; Dth 0.2m) were recorded SSE->SSW.   Description

  Within the interior of ringfort (KE059-034----), off-centre to S. Sub-oval area (dims. c. 7.2m E-W; c. 8m N-S) defined by bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.35m ext. H 0.75m) SE->W->NW; gap (Wth c. 0.75m) at NNW; bank (Wth 4.55m; int. H 0.65m; ext. H 0.2m) levelled out N->SE. L-shaped depression (dims. c. 2.2m N-S; short return c. 2m to E; max. D 0.65m) off-centre to W. Probable collapse into a souterrain, which has subsequently been backfilled and material banked up around it for safety purposes; possible that material from the levelled ringfort bank NW->N->ESE was used in this process.
