• KE038-106 Burnt mound
  Description

  'This site is situated in a low lying area of land 10m east of a stream (known locally as the Big Stream) which flows down to the north from the slopes of Knockawaddra Mountain, The stream is prone to flooding and has cut a steep gorge in the mountain slope. It later joins with the River Lee on its course to the sea. The site consists of a broad low mound measuring 8m N-S and 11m E-W. There is no clear evidence for the trough but a slight lowering of the height of the mound to the west may indicate its presence. The mound remains to a height of 0.57m and has been slightly damaged on its eastern side by an animal track. Here burnt soil and stone is visible in section.' • KE038-108 Enclosure
  Description

  'This site is situated in a small gently sloping field, around 180m east of the Big Stream, on the lower slopes of Knockawaddra Mountain. The field slopes gently from south to north and has been partially cultivated as a house vegetable garden on its western side. The centre of the field contains three separate stretches of earthen bank, the largest of which is slightly curved. The three stretches of bank may once have been joined to form most of the circumference of a small enclosure. However that section near the garden is now gone and the extant section to the east has been partially destroyed by the use of the raised area directly east of it, as a cattle path. The banks are on average 2.6m wide, 0.4m high internally and 0.3m high externally. The raised area at the east of the possible enclosure is substantial and man made. It is 23m in length and 9.5m wide. It remains to a maximum height of 1.7m and may be part of a second structure or earthwork now destroyed by field amalgamation to south, north and east.'   Description

  'This site is situated in a small marshy field on a mountain slope which affords panoramic views to the north and west. This is a low sub-circular mound measuring 8.00m N-S by 9.00m E-W and is 1.00m in maximum height at north. No trough area was in evidence. This stone-filled mound is now grass covered, the soil is black and burnt.'   Description

  'In the adjoining field on the north western side of the above site [KE038-109----] is a large kidney-shaped mound which measures 10.0m E-W by 9.00m N-S. This mound appears to be stone-filled and is now covered in a growth of grass and reeds. It has a maximum height of 0.60m, and a possible, though very denuded trough area, 3.00m by 3.00m, opening to the north. Again, as in the previous example [KE038-109----] the soil has a black burnt appearance.'
