• KE087-050 Cist
  Description

  During field clearance operations in 1984, a cist grave, located on a short gravel ridge at this location, was destroyed (Cleary 1985, 215-23). The cist consisted of four slabs set on edge to form a box-like structure. Each slab measured between .3m and .4m long and up to .45m high. The base of the structure was paved with three slabs. It is not known if the cist was covered with a capstone. The landowner retrieved a sherd of pottery and some cremated bone fragments from its interior. The sherd has been identified by Cleary as probably belonging to the pygmy cup category of Bronze Age pottery. The cremated bone was identified as human, with at least one adult and one juvenile represented. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1467.
