- KE009-051 Ringfort - cashel
Description
Internal diameter 46m N-S, 44m E-W Situated in the centre of a long, narrow arable field which is gently sloping S, this univallate cahir consists of a large circular area enclosed by a stone bank, which is now grass covered. The well-defined enclosing bank rises to a maximum of 1.4m above the interior and 3m above the external ground level. The entrance possibly lay to the W where it was stone lined. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land, and in the NW sector is a large mound, 5m x 9m and .8m high. 'Cave' (KE009-051001-) is marked on the 1841-42 OS map, so the mound may signify where the chamber of a souterrain lies. SE of this is a roughly rectangular stone-lined area; the stone surface gives off a hollow sound when tapped. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 810. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
