Description
Internal diameter 28.7m E-W This fort is named after the townland and is cut out of the N bank of the Cashen River. About 30 years ago the Board of Works cut a channel through this site in order to drain the land, so what we get today is a very distorted picture. A semi-circular inner raised area of c2m high is cut to the S by an earthen bank (overflow bank) running E-W to NE. The channel which encircles the inner area runs from W-N and then E. It was possibly an enclosing fosse, which was deepened and widened to make the channel. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 371. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
