Recorded monuments
- KD003-019001 Church
Description
At the centre of a graveyard (KD003-019002-). An inscribed slab (KD003-019003-) commemorates the restoration of the church in 1554. A rectangular structure (int. dims. traceable L 13.7m E-W; Wth 5.6m N-S) is defined by low (H 1.5m), gapped, ivy-clad N, E and S walls, built of roughly coursed, undressed, limestone blocks. A 19th century tomb overlies the E end of the N wall, and an 18thC grave marker is inserted onto the S wall line near its E end. The base of a window embrasure survives at the W end of the S wall but a small pilaster-like projection (T 0.2m) immediately E of the window is not matched by a corresponding feature in the N wall. The interior also contains a possible 17th century inscribed slab (KD003-019004-) and Fitzgerald (1899-1902, 133-4) recorded a third, 16th century slab (KD003-019003-) which was not located. - KD003-019002 Graveyard
Description
On the level crest at the W end of a partially dug-away esker, in pastureland. A D-shaped area (diam c. 58m E-W) with straight E-side (L c. 48m) is enclosed by a modern, mortared stone wall. It is still in use and the earliest legible burial markers date from the 18th c. It contains a church (KD003-019001-) at the centre, in which there is a 16th century inscribed slab (KD003-019003-) and a possible 17th century inscribed slab (KD003-019004-), while Fitzgerald (1899-1902, 133) recorded a third, 16th century, slab (KD003-019005-) in the graveyard which was not located. - KD003-019003 Graveslab
Description
A 16th century graveslab which, together with a possible 17th century graveslab (KD003-019004-), is located in a church (KD003-019001-). The translated Latin inscription reads 'The burial-place of Richard, son of Malachy Daly of Ballynadrumny, the noble-born restorer of this church, in the year of the Lord 1555' (Fitzgerald 1899-1902, 133). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD003-019004 Graveslab
Description
A possible 17th century graveslab which, together with a 16th century graveslab (KD003-019003-), is located in a church (KD003-019001-). It bears two inscriptions; the earlier, but undated one records the burial of a Thomas Ashe and was thought by Fitzgerald (1899-1902,134) to be of 17th century date, while the second inscription, in different lettering, commemorates another Thomas Ashe and is dated 1792. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD003-019005 Graveslab
Description
Recorded by Fitzgerald (1899-1902, 134) as lying 'a short distance to the south of the church ruins' (KD003-019001-) in Ballynadrumny graveyard (KD003-019002-). The graveslab bore a Latin inscription commemorating a Patrick Sherlock of Ballindrumny with a partially legible date of '155?'. The exact location of this monument is unknown.
