Description
On a hilltop with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. A small slightly raised oval area (25m N-S; 17m E-W) is defined by a scarp with no trace of an associated bank or fosse, although traces of a fosse were visible in 1955 (SMR file, 1972). Visible on a 2010 aerial photo (OSi Orthophoto). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 13 February 2013
- KD028-031 Mound
Description
Recorded as a circular enclosure (est. diam c. 40m) on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map and named ‘Tumulus’ and shown as a raised circular area (est. diam c. 30m), the base of which is girdled SW-N-E by a field boundary, on the latest ed. (1939-40) of the OS map. Described in 1955 as a raised circular area (H 2m; diam. 31m) with a small mound at the centre (H. 0.8m), on a low ridge (SMR file). No visible surface trace survived in 1972 (ibid.). The monument may have been a motte. A castle (KD028-083----) is recorded in Ballysax in 1307, and while its precise location is unknown, it may have stood on or close to this site? - KD028-032 Church
Description
In a graveyard (KD028-032001-). According to OMURETHI (1909-11, 99-100), the present C of I church was rebuilt in 1825, and the surrounding graveyard may contain the burial of Robert Nangle, d. 1615. This suggests there was a church here in the 17th-century, possibly on the site of an older, medieval church, no visible surface trace of which survives. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 13 February 2013
- KD028-032001 Graveyard
Description
On a slight rise. An oval area (58m E-W; 30m N-S) is enclosed by a well-built mortared stone wall with entrance gate at SE. Legible gravemarkers - headstones, kerbed and railed graves, obelisks, and table and recumbent tombs – date from the 18th to the 20th-century. While a 19th-century C of I church stands in the N sector, the graveyard may be the site of a medieval church (KD028-032----). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 13 February 2013
