Description
At the centre of a large graveyard (KD018-019003-) which also contains a holy well (KD018-019002-), and a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD018-019004-). Shown on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map as a rectangular structure orientated NE-SW (est. dims. L c. 20m; Wth c. 8m) but indicated 'Site of', i.e. as no longer extant, on the latest ed. (1910) of the map. The site is marked by a low, grass-covered, rectangular mound (dims. L 13m E-W; Wth 5m; H 0.8-1m) upon which modern headstones have been erected. - KD018-019002 Ritual site - holy well
Description
According to Jackson (1979-80, 149), the well was associated with cures for headaches and sore limbs and a pattern was held there on March 17th. In the N sector of a graveyard (KD018-019003-). A spring well feeds a small channel which flows E (L c. 20m) to join a small tributary flowing SE to join the nearby River Liffey. The well is contained in a concrete well-house surmounted by a mortared-stone shrine containing a statue of St Patrick. Numerous votive offerings adorn the site: miniature statues of Christ and the BVM, rosary beads', religious pamphlets, crutches, hand-written supplications, bibs, hair-slides, grips and go-go's. - KD018-019003 Graveyard
Description
Contains a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD018-019004-), a church site (KD018-019001-) and a holy well (KD018-019002-). A large, sub rectangular area (dims. L c. 150m E-W; Wth c. 100m) is enclosed by a modern, mortared-stone wall and is bordered by the River Liffey to the S and by a small tributary of the Liffey to the E. Older burials occur at the centre of the graveyard, the earliest legible burial markers dating to the 18th century with more modern burial occurring nearer the perimeters of the site. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD018-019004 Ecclesiastical enclosure
Description
In a graveyard (KD018-019003-) in level pasture on the N bank of the River Liffey. A curving arc of poorly preserved, low, broad, earthen bank (Wth 7.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.2m) defines the N and E limits (NNW-E-SE) of a possible ecclesiastical enclosure which contains a church site (KD018-019001-) in the NE sector. A gap (Wth 2m) at NNW is probably modern, allowing a gravel path from the N to link up with a path running inside the line of the bank. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD018-023001 Enclosure
Description
Visible on a GSI aerial photo (N 374-5) as the cropmarks of three, small, closely associated, roughly circular enclosures (KD018-023001-, KD018-023002-, KD018-023003-). Near the top of a gentle S-facing pasture slope, formerly in tillage. There is no visible surface trace of the features. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
