- KD018-009 Enclosure
Description
Shown on Longfield's 1813 map (NLI Ms. 21. F. 34 (8)) accompanying a 'Survey … of the Estate of J. Mansfield Esq.' as a circular enclosure named 'Moat'. On level pasture at the top of a moderately steep SE-facing pasture slope in a field that is known locally as 'The Moat Field'. In 1986 a pit was visible in a sand/gravel-pit face 'adjacent to the site' (SMR file), and a large pit is shown immediately to the N of the monument on the 1st. Ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map. That pit has since been infilled and the area is grassed-over. No visible surface trace of the monument, which may have been a ringfort, survives. (NLI Ms. 16. - KD018-010 Cross - Wayside cross
Description
According to the OSL (2002, 45 (137)), ' … there is a stone in which was set a cross, none of which now remains. I [P. O'Keeffe] met several who remembered to have seen this cross'. It was described by Fitzgerald (1899-1902, 195-6) as, ' … a rough granite base of a cross, known locally as "the Wart Stone"; it is almost invisible as it is sunk deep in the ground by the roadside … ', while Crawford (1907, 237) called it 'a socket stone'. The exact location of this monument is unknown. There was a second cross base (KD018-012----) c. 350m to the SSE and a church (KD018-011001-) and graveyard (KD018-011002-) lie c. 200m to the ESE. - KD018-011001 Church
Description
Possibly the 'small friary' mentioned by Tickell (1960, 375) as being in existence in 1731, and a church is shown here on Taylor's 1783 Map of County Kildare. According to the OSL (Herity 2002, 45 (137)), there existed '… the ruins of an old church, the burial ground (KD018-011002-) belonging to which is still in use'. In the S sector of a graveyard (KD018-011002-). This levelled monument survives as a low, grass-covered, rectangular area (dims. L 15.5m E-W; Wth 10.7m; H 0.7m) defined along the N side by low wall facing (H 0.7m) of randomly coursed limestone blocks and spall-stones. A roadside cross (KD018-010----) once stood c. 200m to the NW and a second roadside cross (KD018-012----) existed in the vicinity also. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD018-011002 Graveyard
Description
According to the OSL (Herity 2002, 45 (137)), 'In Carragh T.L. are the ruins of an old church (KD018-011001-), the burial ground belonging to which is still in use'. The burial ground is, however, not indicated on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map. At the top of a gentle, E-facing pasture slope. A rectangular area (dims L 40m E-W, Wth c. 30m) is enclosed by a mortared stone wall on the S, W and N sides, and by a deep drain (D 2m; Wth 1.8m) along the E. There is an entrance gate on the W side. The ruins of a church (KD018-011001-) lie in the S sector and the burials are marked mainly by headstones, with a few flat graveslab, the earliest legible of which date to the 18th-century. A modern extension to the graveyard runs to the E and S. A roadside cross (KD018-010----) once stood c. 200m to the NW and a second roadside cross (KD018-012----) existed in the vicinity also.
