• KD028-022 Church
  Description

  In a graveyard (KD028-022002-). The church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was dependant on the church (KD028-049005-) in Old Kilcullen (Omurethi 1899-1902, 318, 322-4). A restored (1979-80) rectangular structure (ext. 15.8m E-W; 7.1m N-S) built of uncoursed rubble limestone masonry (wall T 1.2m). There are opposing doorways in the N and S sidewalls, opposing window opes at the E ends of the N and S walls, and a window ope in the E gable wall. A double bellcote on the W gable wall is incorporated into a later, very narrow (Wth 1.7m E-W) three-storey tower which is accessed via an intramural stairs in the W wall. Doorways in the tower gave access to wall-walks on the N and S sidewalls of the church. The interior contains an effigial tomb (KD028-022001-).   In a church (KD028-022----). A reconstructed tomb with a knightly effigy, probably that of Richard FitzEustace who died between 1491 and 1496. The side panels are composed of figures within ogee headed arcading, resting on a plinth with hollow mouldings of animals and gothic foliage (Hunt 1974, 154-5). • KD028-023 Castle - tower house
  Description

  On a former demesne, c. 100m W of the N-Flowing River Liffey. A medieval church (KD028-022----) stands c. 275m to the NE. The castle was the property of Arnold Fitz Eustace le Poer by 1317, and in 1448 it was unsuccessfully attacked by Cathal O'Connor Faly. It was subsequently burnt in 1647 before being recaptured and destroyed by Colonel Hewson (Tickell 1955, 271-2; 1958, 308, 316-7). Partial remains are incorporated into the basement an early 18th-century house, and comprise a rectangular structure (int. L 10.7m; Wth 5.2m) of uncoursed limestone rubble, into which a later partition wall has been inserted. The present doorway is probably original and there are at least two, blocked, loops with deep splays. A barrel vaulted ceiling bears traces of wicker centring.   Detached eighteen-bay three-storey convent, dated 1886, possibly originally nine-bay retaining early fenestration with six-bay three-storey advanced bay to rear elevation to north-west. Reroofed, c.1970, to south-west. Now also in use as school. Hipped roofs with slate to north-east (replacement artificial slate, c.1970, to south-west). Decorative red clay crested ridge tiles to north-east. Replacement concrete ridge tiles to south-west. Rendered chimney stacks. Profiled cast-iron rainwater goods on paired corbels. Rendered walls. Ruled and lined. Unpainted. Pointed-arch openings. Stone sills. Early 2/2 timber sash windows. Moulded recessed doorcases approached by flight of two cut-stone steps, one with cut-stone date stone/plaque over. Timber panelled doors. Sidelights. Overlights. Pointed-arch recessed niche to south-east with moulded cut-stone surround having statuary. Lancet-arch openings (in tripartite arrangement to south-east elevation having oculus window over to gable). Stone sills. Fixed-pane timber windows to nave walls with stained glass fittings. Traceried timber windows to north-west and to south-east with stained glazing.Detached four-bay two-storey building, c.1890, to north-west possibly over basement retaining early fenestration with tripartite window openings and three-bay single-storey wing to south-east possibly linking bay to convent. Reroofed, c.1970. Gable-ended roof (hipped to wing). Replacement artificial slate, c.1970. Concrete ridge tiles. Rendered chimney stacks. Cast-iron rainwater goods on eaves course. Rendered walls. Unpainted. Square-headed window openings (some tripartite window openings; pointed-arch to wing).   Detached single-bay single-storey gate lodge, c.1820, with single-bay side elevation to south. Renovated, c.1980, and possibly extended. Hipped (pyramidal profile) roof with slate. Clay ridge tiles. Rendered chimney stack. Overhanging timber eaves with paired granite brackets. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls. Ruled and lined. Painted. Square-headed window openings (tripartite arrangement in segmental-headed recessed panel to east). Stone sills. Rendered surround with entablature to east. Timber casement windows.
