• KD024-020 Church
  Description

  In a graveyard (KD024-020001-), on the Naas to Glendalough pilgrimage route, with an old laneway (KD024-032----) just to the N possibly forming part of that route. Named for St. Kevin, the church was part of the parish of the dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough in 1216. It is last mentioned in a visitation report of 1609 (O’Neill 2004-5, 438). Low, poorly preserved, grass-covered walls of mortared limestone and occasional tufa (max. H. 1m) define a rectangular structure comprising a dug out nave (min. 15.8m E-W; 6.5m N-S) and a possibly later chancel (9.6m E-W; 4.2m N-S). Stands on sloping ground with two buttresses against the N wall (downslope). Three cross slabs (KD024-020002-, KD024-020003- and KD024-020004-) and fragment of a baptismal font (KD024-020005-) were recorded here in 1985 (Healy SMR file).   Description

  On the S edge of a narrow E-W valley, on the Naas to Glendalough pilgrimage route, with an old laneway (KD024-032----) just to the N possibly forming part of that route. Toberkevin, a holy well (KD-24-021----), lies c. 150m to the ESE. An almost square, overgrown area (c. 50m N-S; c. 50m E-W) is enclosed by a stone wall. Contains a ruined church (KD024-020----) in which three cross slabs (KD024-020002-, KD024-020003- and KD024-020004-) and fragment of a font (KD024-020005-) were recorded in 1985 (Healy SMR file).   In 1985, Healy (SMR file) recorded three cross-slabs in Tipperkevin Church (KD024-020----): 'A' (KD024-020002-) a fine tapered slab of granite (L 1.83m; Wth 0.42-0.53m) with an incised Greek cross with expanded arms. 'B' (KD024-020003-) a large tapered slab of granite slab of granite (L 1.9m; Wth 0.6-0.77m) decorated with a single shaft with ringed cross at each end, in relief. 'C' (KD024-020004-) the lower portions of a granite slab (min. L. 1.04m; max. Wth. 0.42m ), with two parallel incised lines representing the shaft of a cross. Two of the slabs, (KD024-020002- and KD024-020004-) were subsequently published (Healy 2009, 101, 104-5). Only one cross slab (KD024-020004-) was located on a 1986 visit when the interior of the church appeared to have been recently dug out (SMR file). • KD024-021 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  In a slight hollow in a N-facing pasture slope, some 150m ESE of Tipperkevin Church (KD024-020----) and graveyard (KD024-020001-). According to Jackson (1979-80, 155), while there was no formal pattern at the well, miraculous cures were reputed to have been obtained from its waters, and it may have been located on an old pilgrimage route to Glendalough.
