The Rinawade - Dunfirth Tee - Kinnegad 110 kV OHL circuit runs through County Meath, County Kildare and County Offaly. It is 54 km in length and travels from Kinnegad 110 kV substation in Killaskillen (County Meath) and traverses southeast where a short loop into Dunfirth 110 kV substation in Dunfirth (County Kildare) exists. The line then continues southeast where it terminates at Rinawade 110kV substation in Rinawade Lower (County Kildare). The OHL has a total of 249no. supporting structures. Within the functional area of Kildare County Council, there is 30.66 km of the existing OHL circuit, with 140 no. structures. Within the functional area of Meath County Council there is 23.16 km, with 107 no. structures, and within the functional area of Offaly County Council there is 0.42 km, with 2 no. structures. Separate planning applications will be lodged with Meath County Council and Offaly County Council. The proposed development within Co. Kildare will comprise: the replacement (“restringing”) of the existing OHL circuit conductor wires with a new higher capacity conductor between structure numbers 93 - 153, 224 - 226, and 240 - 247; the strengthening of tower foundations at 9no. locations; the strengthening of towers (i.e., member replacement) at 14no. locations; the painting of towers at 15no. locations; shear block remedial works of towers at 1no. location; the replacement of polesets at 43no. locations, with similar structures. There will be no change in height at 6no. poleset replacements. There will be height increases between 0.1m and 2.0m at 33no. poleset replacements. • KD004-005001 Church
  Description

  Stands to W of centre in a graveyard (KD004-005003-). A fairly well-preserved, rectangular structure (int. dims. L 21.5m E-W; Wth 6.7m at W; Wth 5.2m at E; av. wall T 1m) comprising a W nave (int. dims. L 12.5m E-W; Wth 6.7m), and a rebuilt E chancel (int. dims. L 8m E-W; Wth 5.2m), built of roughly dressed, randomly coursed limestone blocks, buttressed at E end of nave and E gable of chancel, and with a slight base-batter on the W gable wall. All walls survive to near original height The nave is entered through a later, flat-headed doorway (Wth 1.4m) in the S wall, and is lit by a twin-light ogee-headed window in the W gable and by opposing single-light ogee-head windows at the E ends of the N and S walls with opposing corbel stones above to E. A rectangular niche (dims. Wth 0.75m; H 0.45m; D 0.5m) beside the doorway on the E side probably contained a stoup and there is a tall rectangular niche (dims. H 2m; Wth 0.63m; D 0.35m) at the E end of the S wall. The nave contains 18th century and 19th century headstones to E of centre, and there is an overgrown dump of broken headstones at the E end. There is no access from the nave to the chancel, the chancel arch area having been blocked by the early-19th century, brick-built Hamilton vault which contains part of a 16th century altar-tomb (KD004-005003-). The blocking wall itself contains a blocked-up, flat-headed doorway, flanked on either side by two, small square recesses (dims. Wth 0.62m; H 0.74m). However, a step-back in the E wall of the nave with the base of a column on the S side marks the edge of the chancel-arch. The chancel is entered through a recently inserted two-centred arched doorway, (which may have come from the nearby castle (KD004-006----), with fluted surround, hood-moulding and chamfer-stops, in the E gable wall. There is a square aumbry (dims. 0.45m x 0.45m) with iron hinges on its E side and a similar but less well-built aumbry in the S wall. The interior is almost completely occupied by the Hamilton vault. Fitzgerald (1891-5, 242) recorded a 17 century tomb (KD004-005004-) in the SE corner of the church. • KD004-005002 Tomb - effigial
  Description

  In a medieval church (KD004-005001-) containing an early-19th century Hamilton burial vault which incorporates substantial parts of a mid-16th century Bermingham altar tomb. A mensa slab with the effigy of Sir William Bermingham (died 1548) in 'white' armour stands upright inside the vault and the side panels of the tomb (which would have supported the mensa slab) each carved with six figures of the apostles are incorporated into the outer faces of the N and S walls of the burial vault, with an end panel showing the Christ crucified on the outer face of the W wall. On the inner wall face at E a panel fragment is carved with the subject of an 'Ecce Homo' (Hunt 1971, 12-16). There is also a carved limestone fragment showing a shield and inscribed 'TB A 1519'. The tomb may belong to the same workshop which produced the Wellesley monument at Great Connell (KD023-016----) (ibid 156-58). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011

• KD004-005003 Graveyard
  Description

  On the gentle W-facing slope of a low, narrow, N-S pasture ridge. A castle (KD004-006----) stood c. 60m to the E. A rectangular embanked area (dims L c. 50m E-W; Wth c. 40m; ext. H 1.5m) with an ivy-clad, dry-stone retaining wall at the base of the embankment along the S contains a medieval church (KD004-005001-) to W of centre. Legible burial markers dating to the 18th century and 19th century are concentrated to the S of the church, with more recent burials to the E. • KD004-006 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  According to the OSL (Herity 2002, 37), ' … there stood an old castle, none of which remains'. On a low, narrow, N-S pasture ridge with a medieval church (KD004-005001-) c. 60m to the WSW. The area is now occupied by farm sheds, concrete yards and cattle pens and there is no visible surface trace of the monument, which was probably a tower house. A stone with a monkey carved on it was reported locally to have been found here in the 1980's and subsequently sold. It may have been part of a coat of arms of the Fitzgeralds (SMR file). • KD004-012 Moated site
  Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope in improved, formerly wet, pastureland, with a second moated site (KD004-030----) c. 120m to the W, and a possible holy well site (KD004-023----) immediately to the W. A fairly well-preserved rectangular area (int. dims. L 36m NE-SW; Wth 31m NW-SE) with slightly raised internal corners, is defined by a broad fosse (Wth 8-10m; D 0.6m on SE side-1.2m on NW side) with stone revetment visible on the inner face at S, and by a low outer bank (Wth 2.5m; int H 2.2m; ext. H 0.4m) composed of earth and stone, at the W corner. A later field fence overlies the outer lip of the fosse along the NE and SE sides, and was noted along the SW side in 1972 (SMR file). • KD004-023 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Jackson(1979-80, 147) states that this site was regarded locally as a holy well. It is named 'Furan Well' on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map (the name being derived from 'fuar'- cold: see also Fuaran holy well in Boghall Td (KD031-001----)) and shown at the W corner of a moated site (KD004-012----). No longer visible at ground level, but the ground in this area is wet underfoot. A small fenced-off area at the S corner of the moated site may be the location of a covered well or spring. • KD004-030 Moated site
  Description

  On a gentle W-facing slope in improved pasture, with a second moated site (KD004-012----) c. 120m to the E. A dry meander indicates where a stream formerly flowed close by to the W. A poorly preserved, almost square area (int. dims. L 29m E-W; Wth 27m N-S) the interior of which is raised slightly (H 0.4m) above the surrounding ground along the S and W, is defined by a shallow fosse (Wth 1.9m along S - 4m along E; D 0.2m) from the SE corner of which a leat runs S (L 25m; Wth 1.5m; D 0.2m) to join a small stream flowing W. In 1955 the site possessed an outer bank, and an entrance at NW (SMR file), but neither feature is visible at ground level. The site is heavily poached by grazing sheep.
