- KD004-026001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
Description
Near the top of a long, gentle E-facing pasture slope. A large D-shaped area (int diam. c. 80m N-S) with a straight S side (L c. 96m) is defined by a low, grassed-over earthen bank (Wth 1.6m; int H 0.2m; ext H 0.6m) and shallow outer fosse (Wth 5.4m; D 0.6m) W-N-E, which is recut as a later field drain NNW-NNE, and by a low scarp (H 0.6m) along its straight S side. In 1985 local information suggested that the site extended further S but was levelled by compulsory ploughing during the Second World War (SMR file). (CUCAP AYR 48 (1969); Costello 1999, 55). - KD004-026002 Church
Description
To the E of centre of an ecclesiastical enclosure (KD004-026001-). A ruinous rectangular structure (int. dims. L 12.6m E-W; Wth 4.8m N-S) is defined by low, collapsed, grassed-over stone walling (Wth 3.4m; int H 0.2m; ext. H 0.8m), with original internal and external wall facing stones surviving at E (wall T 1.1m). A gap (Wth 2.1m) near the W end of the S wall marks the location of a robbed-out doorway. The interior contains an 18th/19th century headstone and the site is heavily poached by livestock. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD004-026003 Graveyard
Description
In an ecclesiastical enclosure (KD004-026001-). Not indicated on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map but is recorded in the OSL (Herity 2002, 30) as ' … an old burial ground called Cill Domhnaill ..., in which children only are interred at present (KD004-026007-)'. A single, illegible headstone of probable 18th/19th century date is the only visible marked burial and stands in the ruined church (KD004-026002-). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD004-026004 Building
Description
To W of centre in an ecclesiastical enclosure (KD004-026001-). A very poorly preserved, rectangular structure (ext. dims. L 11m N-S; Wth 6m E-W) is defined by low, collapsed, grassed-over stone walls (Wth 1.4m; H 0.2-0.4m). It stands c. 10m W of a church (KD004-026002-). Its N-S orientation suggests that it was not a second church. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD004-026005 Building
Description
In the N sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (KD004-026001-). A second, similar, structure (KD004-026006-) lies c. 8m to the E. A low, oval shaped, grass covered area of collapsed stone (dims. - KD004-026007 Children's burial ground
Description
In an early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD004-026001-). The OSL (Herity 2002, 30) record that, ' … there is an old burial ground (KD004-026003-) called Cill Domhnail ..., in which children only are interred at present'. There is no visible surface trace of any marked children's graves. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD004-028 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a gentle N-facing pasture slope. Shown on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch as an enclosed tree copse, but represented as an unenclosed stand of trees on the latest ed. (1911) of the map. A poorly preserved circular area (int. diam. 26m) is defined by a shallow fosse (Wth c. 4m; D 0.3m). It may have been an ornamental landscape feature, but its siting suggests that an existing ringfort might have been adapted to that purpose. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
