Probably a ringbarrow or a ditch-barrow. • KD032-011 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  On a N-facing pasture slope in a field known locally as 'the Castle field'. A castle is shown in this general area by Noble and Keenan on their 1752 Map of County Kildare. • KD032-012001 Standing stone
  Description

  Towards the N end on a low partially quarried away esker. A tall (H. 2.3m) thin tapering granite stone (base L 0.61m; Wth 0.46m; top L 0.46m; Wth 0.3m) has a later cross incised on its SW face. While the cross may be associated with burials (KD032-012002-) discovered immediately to the N in 1987, Meagher (1936, 192) records that, ‘… 100 years ago or more, Father Lawlor and Father Cummins lived in a garden at Kilgowan cross-roads …; and it was one of these men that cut the cross on the Long Stone’. • KD032-012002 Burial
  Description

  In a partially quarried away esker, immediately N and downslope from a standing stone (KD032-012001-). In 1987, burials were discovered when an access road was being created. A linear area (L c. 150m E-W; min. Wth c. 10m at W; max. Wth c. 38m at E) had been disturbed and was subsequently archaeologically excavated (Keeley 1987. Excavation Licence No. E000420). Nine extended inhumation burials in simple shallow graves, without grave goods, together with the remains of a further 16 disturbed burials were uncovered, as well as pottery and iron objects. Portion of a possible enclosing ditch (D 0.8m; Wth 3m) and a hearth were also found. In the absence of definitive dating evidence and pending the results of Carbon 14 analysis of bone, the excavator could only conclude that the site probably dated to any time from the Iron Age (c. 500 BC- AD 400) through to medieval times (5th to16th-century AD). • KD032-051 Rock art
  Description

  Found, in 1984, ex situ in spoil from an adjacent road widening scheme. An irregularly shaped boulder fragment (L 0.61m; Wth 0.52m; max. T 0.18m) is decorated on one face with a cupmark surrounded by four incised circles with a gap or channel on one side. The lower part of this motif is missing because of damage to the stone. A double circle is attached to the main motif. It is probably a fragment of a larger decorated stone and was recovered from spoil beside the road in the course of road widening.   Description

  In 1984, human remains were discovered after the removal of a gravel ridge during a road-widening project, and were investigated ex situ by NMI staff. A minimum of four individuals were present, at least three adults and a possible adolescent. The precise original location of the burials was not determined. • KD032-061 Fulacht fia
  Description

  This site was archaeologically excavated (Excavation Licence No. 07E2886) as part of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford Road Scheme, Phase 3: Kilcullen to Carlow. A low irregularly shaped mound (L 9.5m; Wth 9m; H 0.25m) was composed of black silty clay, heat-shattered sandstones and charcoal. Underlying the mound was a subrectangular-shaped trough (2.1m N-S; 1.7m E-W; D 0.6m) with gradual to sharply profiled sides and a flat base, that was truncated by an oval-shaped arrangement of twelve stakes. Eleven individual elements of timber were also recovered from the trough, suggesting it was originally wood lined. Two isolated spreads of burnt material were found to the E, overlying silt deposits contained within an old stream course and close to a present day stream. A number of other pits were also excavated, and contained mound-like material. No finds were recovered. (Hackett 2010, 211-12 (No. 824)) Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 12 November 2013
