• KD015-004001 Church
  Description

  The monument is 'the ruins of the old parish church … dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary (JKAS 1914, 279-80). Stands in the NW corner of a graveyard (KD015-004002-). A fairly poorly preserved and altered rectangular structure, standing to original height, comprises a nave (dims. L 14.25m; Wth 8.5m) and chancel (dims. L 7.2m; Wth 6.7m). It is built of angular, undressed, rubble limestone masonry (wall T 0.95m), with well dressed granite quoins on the E gable wall of the chancel which is reused as a private, and inaccessible, burial vault. The nave is entered through an iron gate in a rebuilt pointed-arched doorway (Wth 1.1m; H 2.4m) in the S wall. Its limestone arch-stones are decorated with four angels carved in high relief and the granite base of a font (KD015-004004-) is reused as the lowest jamb stone on the W side of the doorway, the jamb stones of which are granite. A second, opposing, pointed-arched doorway (Wt 0.95m; H 1.4m) in the N wall has limestone arch stones and granite jamb stones. It has been blocked-up to house a 16th century Aylmer armorial plaque (KD015-004003-). The nave was lit by a fine, ogee-headed, granite window with fluted jambs, barring holes and glazing grooves, set in a large, round-arched, granite embrasure, now blocked with red brick, towards the W end of the S wall. A second, opposing, but plainer, ogee-headed window in the N wall is plastered-over internally, and a large window ope in the W gable wall is infilled with red brick. The nave contains modern burial plots and commemorative plaques (19th and 20th C) are affixed to the inner face of the plastered N wall, and a late-17th century slate plaque (KD015-004005-) is built into a small recess in the outer face of the S wall. A plain, well-built, chancel arch of granite (Wth 2.3m; H 3.4m) is blocked-off with iron railings backed with galvanised sheeting. A well-dressed corbel with a rebated upper surface projects from the wall face immediately S of the chancel opening, in line with the springing of the arch, and there are traces of a matching, but broken, corbel on the N side of the arch. The chancel has been substantially rebuilt; its N wall stands just inside the foundation line of an earlier wall, and its shallow-pitched, slate roof is lower than an older roofline which is visible as a scar line on the E gable wall. The chancel was lit by two ogee-headed windows, now blocked, in the S wall, and by a tall, narrow pointed-arched window, with bar-slot holes and glazing groove, in the E gable wall, the lower half of which has been infilled and fitted with a second sill-stone.   On level pasture which was formerly extensively wooded demesne land, as indicated on the 1st ed. (1838) and latest ed. (1939) of the OS 6-inch map. A rectangular area (dims. L c. 40m E-W; Wth c. 30m N-S) is enclosed by a mortared stone wall. The legible burial markers date mainly from the 19th c. A church (KD015-004001-) stands in the NW corner.   Description

  According to Killanin and Duignan (1967, 160), 'The 1548 memorial to Richard Aylmer bears the arms of the Flemmings of Slane and the Tyrells. The Tyrells got possession of Lyons in the Middle Ages. From them it passed, seemingly by marriage, to the Aylmer family. The Aylmers sold it to the first Lord Cloncurry.' Built into the N wall of a church (KD015-004001-).   Description

  Built into the W jamb of the S doorway in the old parish church at Lyons (KD015-004001-). A small, square, perforated font base (dims. Wth 0.6m; H 0.6m) with a slightly raised roundel (diam. 0.4m) which acted as a tenon with a central perforation (diam. 0.008m), has been turned on its edge and reused in the church doorway. • KD015-005 Gatehouse
  Description

  A 'castle' is marked in this general area on the Down Survey (1655-6) and, although not recorded on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map, it is named 'Castle' on the latest ed. (1939) . It is recorded that, '(Lyons) Formerly contained a hamlet of the same name, which in 1612 was burned by Government troops … Its site, now included in Lord Cloncurry's demesne of Lyons, is marked by the ruins of a tower or "castle" … and by the ruins of the old parish church.' (KD015-004001-) (JKAS 1914, 279-80). The structure named 'Castle' on the current OS 6-inch map is an archwayed entrance with castellated tower, giving access to a 19th century (?) courtyard. The broad entrance-way (int. dims. L 4.2m E-W; Wth 3.1m) is built of thin, roughly coursed flags and is roofed with a flat-arched vault, supported by thick walls (T 1.3m) along the N and S sides. A small rectangular tower (ext. dims. L 2.3m E-W; Wth 2.1m) projects N from the N side of the entrance and contains a spiral stairs, lit by loops, which is accessed through a narrow (Wth 0.7m), round-arched doorway in its W wall. The stairs lead to a small, rectangular room (dims. L 3.3m N-S; Wth 2.2m) at first-floor level which is lit by a square-headed window in its W wall. Above first-floor level the walls of the tower step out to accommodate a wall-walk with gutter-holes. The structure is folly-like in appearance.   Description

  According to Killanin and Duignan (1967, 160), ' … Lyons Hill (is) one of the early royal seats and public assembly places of the kingdom of Leinster, and later chief seat of the Mac Giolla Mo-Cholmógs of Uí Dúnlainge. … It is also one of the places claimed as the scene of Daniel O'Connell's celebrated duel with D'Esterre (1815)' . On a hilltop (OD 651 feet) in former demesne land with panoramic views in all directions, especially S-W-NE. A very poorly preserved oval area (ext. diams. 63m E-W; 55m N-S) is defined by a low scarp (H0.3-0.9m) which is retained by thin, flaggy, facing-stones which are visible in a short arc (L 3m) at W, and intermittently at NW where grazing has denuded the sod cover, and by a very broad and shallow outer fosse (Wth 12m; D 0.9m) ENE-E-ESE which separates the monument from a natural spur immediately to the E. At the centre of the monument, a low, poorly preserved, circular cairn (diam. 10m; H 1.5m) carries a concrete OS Trigonometrical Station.   Description

  Discovered from an aerial photograph (L. Swan, SMR file). On a gentle, NNE-facing, pasture slope near the N-foot of Lyons Hill (OD 651 feet), in former demesne grounds. A very poorly preserved sub circular area (int. diams. 34.3m ESE-WNW; 30.2m NNE-SSW) is defined by a broad, low earthen bank (Wth 5.6-7.7m; int H 0.2m; ext. H 0.7-1.5m) which is reduced to a low scarp (H 1.5m) N-NE. A small meteorological station (dims. L 1m; Wth 1m) encased in concrete is embedded into the top of the bank in the E sector.   Single-arch rubble stone road bridge over canal, built 1784. Coursed ashlar piers and dressed voussoirs to segmental arch. Parapet walls with coping terminate in curves to tow paths. Inscribed stone panel to each outer face. Rope-cut grooves to south piers.
