  Description

  According to Killanin and Duignan (1967, 159), Celbridge (formerly known as Kildrought), ' … takes its name from a monastery founded by St. Mo-chúa of Clondalkin … .' Bradley et al. (1986, Vol. 2, 126) note that practically nothing is known of this foundation. It was probably located on, or near, the site of the later medieval church (KD011-012005-), where the sweeping curve of Church Road around the church and graveyard (WNW-N-ENE: est. diam. c. 120m) may follow the line of an early ecclesiastical enclosure.   Description

  Stands in a graveyard (KD011-012006-) on the site of a probable early Christian monastery traditionally associated with St. Mochua, the only visible trace of which is part of the curving line of a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD011-012004-). According to Bradley et al. (1986, vol. 2, 130-33), the medieval parish church is first referred to in the charters of Thomas de Hereford, granting the church of Kildroch to St. Thomas' Abbey, Dublin. One-third of the church's income was reserved for the support of the vicar, an arrangement which continued into the 16th c. The vicarage was valued at 43s in the ecclesiastical taxation of 1302-6. The royal visitation of 1615 noted that the church and chancel of Kildrought were in good repair. Drawn by Austin Cooper c. 1780 (Price 1942, pl. 1). The remains consist of the E-gable wall (H 7m) , and the grassed-over foundations of the N and S walls of a nave and chancel structure (dims. L 22.5m; Wth 7.6m). A rectangular fortified tower (dims. L 7.6m; Wth 4.6m) at W, with a stair turret projecting from its SW angle was extensively modified as an Aylmer family mausoleum. The nave appears to have been buttressed at E, on the N and S walls. The E gable has a large, three light, round headed window with transom switch line tracery, now represented by the jambs and mullion. Coopers drawing shows a vestry close to the SE corner. The nave is probably of 14 century date, to which the tower was added in the 15th/16th c. The modified tower's original E wall has been removed and re-built in the nave c. 4m to the E. The present entrance in the N wall is possibly original, although Cooper's drawing shows the entrance in the W wall, and three floors above a vault with parapet and narrow belfry, together with a battlemented stair turret. The structure was subsequently lowered and topped by modern crenelations.   Detached seven-bay (two- or three-bay deep) three-storey over basement country house, built 1724; dated 1724, on a rectangular plan centred on three-bay full-height breakfront; seven-bay three-storey rear (east) elevation centred on three-bay full-height breakfront. Hipped slate roof on a quadrangular plan behind parapet with pressed or rolled lead ridges, rendered central chimney stack with rendered chimney stacks on T-shaped plans (east) having cut-limestone stringcourses below capping, and concealed rainwater goods retaining embossed cast-iron hoppers ("1724") and downpipes. Part creeper- or ivy-covered repointed coursed cut-limestone walls on lichen-spotted cut-limestone chamfered cushion course on plinth with cut-limestone stringcourses including ogee-detailed cut-limestone cornice on blind frieze on cut-limestone stringcourse below parapet. Square-headed central door opening with cut-limestone platform, and cut-limestone surround framing timber panelled double doors having overlight. Square-headed window openings in camber-headed recesses (basement) with cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds framing six-over-six timber sash windows without horns having part exposed sash boxes. Square-headed window openings (ground floor) with cut-limestone lugged surrounds framing nine-over-nine (ground floor) timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with cut-limestone lugged surrounds framing nine-over-six (first floor) timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings (top floor) with cut-limestone surrounds framing six-over-six timber sash windows. Square-headed central door opening to rear (east) elevation approached by flight of three lichen-spotted cut-limestone steps supporting wrought iron bootscrapers, cut-limestone doorcase with monolithic pilasters supporting ogee-detailed segmental pediment on "Acanthus" consoles, and cut-limestone surround framing glazed timber panelled double doors having overlight. Square-headed window openings (ground floor) with cut-limestone lugged surrounds framing nine-over-nine (ground floor) timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with cut-limestone lugged surrounds framing nine-over-six (first floor) timber sash windows. • Tea Lane Graveyard, mausoleum, 1735–1740 · Regional interest
  Description

  Attached two-bay single-storey single-cell "death house" or mausoleum, built 1736, on a rectangular plan. Pitched slate roof on collared timber construction with lichen-covered terracotta ridge tiles, and no rainwater goods on cut-limestone eaves. Part ivy-covered lime rendered battered walls with concealed cut-limestone flush quoins to corners. Round-headed window openings with cut-limestone flush sills, and cut-limestone flush block-and-start surrounds framing red brick English bond infill. Round-headed window opening (south) with cut-limestone sill, and cut-limestone flush surround centred on keystone framing infill. Interior retaining spear head-detailed wrought iron railings centred on Classical-style memorial. Set in shared grounds.
