  Description

  Description

  At the W end of a low E-W pasture ridge overlooking an extensive tract of bog to W. Believed locally to be the burial place of monks from the Cistercian Abbey at Mooreabbey Demesne (KD026-001----), to which it was reputedly linked via ‘The Dane’s Road’, a togher (KD027-001001-) crossing the bog to the W. An unenclosed rectangular area (OS 25-inch map dims c. 70m NE-SW; c. 45m NW-SE) is defined by a low gently curving scarp (H 0.4-0.8m) ESE-S-WSW, but is without clearly defined limits elsewhere.   Single-arch dressed stone hump back road bridge over railway line, c.1850, with rock-faced limestone voussoirs, cut-stone stringcourse and dressed stone coping. Coursed dressed stone walls. Cut-stone stringcourse. Coursed dressed stone parapet walls. Dressed stone coping. Single elliptical arch. Rock-faced limestone voussoirs. Ashlar soffits. Sited spanning Great Southern and Western Railway line (Cherryville Junction to Kilkenny).

  Detached three-bay two-storey rubble stone house, c.1880, with round-headed door opening to centre. Extended, c.1980, comprising single-bay single-storey flat-roofed return to rear to north-east. Extensively renovated, c.2000. Hipped roof. Replacement artificial slate, c.2000. Concrete ridge tiles. Rendered chimney stacks. Timber eaves. Replacement uPVC rainwater goods, c.2000. Flat-roof to return. Bitumen felt. Rubble stone walls (probably originally with render over). Yellow brick dressings. Rendered walls to return. Unpainted. Square-headed window openings. Stone sills. Yellow brick surrounds. Replacement uPVC casement windows, c.2000. Round-headed door opening. Yellow brick dressings. Replacement timber panelled door, c.2000. Sidelights. Overlight.
