Description
An undated map of Rathsillagh (NLI Ms. 21.F. 35 (066)) includes the word 'castle' at the location of the present Rathsillagh House. A large two storied outbuilding (L 30m; Wth 15m) with substantial stone walls (av. T 1.5m), now used as a barn, may incorporate the remains of the castle (pers. comm. S. Hickey). Near the top of a long moderately steep E-facing pasture slope. Visible on 1971 aerial photographs (CUCAP AVM 25, BGN 19) as the cropmarks of two parallel fosses enclosing a large oval enclosure (est max diam. c. 80m NW-SE), with the cropmarks of two other parallel fosses to the E, possibly forming part of an associated field system (KD032-017002-).
