  Description

  One of three toghers (see also KD012-003001- and KD012-004001-) converging on Derrybrennan townland, a small 'island' of high ground in the expanse of bog to the N of Lullymore, which were investigated by Rynne (1964-5, 35-7) on behalf of the NMI after their discovery was reported by Bord na Móna. The togher ran between higher ground in Ticknevin townland to the N and Derrybrennan townland to the S (est. L c. 1500m). Rynne traced its S limits, followed its course N for about half its length, archaeologically excavated a portion of the monument (L 9m; Wth 1m), and made some 'minor cuttings at one or two points'. The togher was found at a depth of c. 1.2-1.5m below the estimated original level of the bog's surface, which had been almost cut away. It was orientated on an approximately NNW-SSE axis and consisted of two continuous lines of parallel pairs of oak planks (av. L. c. 4.5m; Wth c. 0.4m) which were laid longitudinally on the peat and were supported at each end on transverse, oak roundwood sleepers. The planks had rectangular mortices at each end through which long (av. L. c. 0.6m), axe-sharpened, oak pegs were driven to anchor them in place. In other places, one wide plank was used instead of two narrower ones. It was subsequently radiocarbon-dated to 1200+/-20 BP (GrN-14728) (Brindley and Lanting 1998, 47).   Description

  On level pasture c. 100m NW of a ruined medieval church (KD012-012001-). A circular hollow (diam. 0.4m; D 0.25m) in a natural rock outcrop is known locally as the 'Wart Well'. Traditionally, the 'well' appeared after St Brigid's horse left a hoof-mark in the stone. For a cure, it must be visited three times; a pin is left at the first visit and at the third visit the pins and warts will have disappeared. (Jackson 1979-80, 147).   Description

  In a roadside graveyard (KD012-012002-). A poorly preserved, rectangular structure (dims. traceable L 9.4m E-W; Wth 7.3m; Wall T 1m) is built of uncoursed, rubble limestone masonry with undressed quoins. The W gable wall is missing. There is a doorway with a round, segmented arch in the N wall which also contains a partially robbed-out window. The E gable wall contains a window with a flat segmented arch.   Description

  On the roadside in level pasture and partly enclosed by a stone wall which also bounds some modern farm buildings. A holy well (KD012-008-) lies c. 100m to the NW. The graveyard is not indicated on either Taylor's Map of County Kildare (1783) or on the latest ed. (1909) of the OS 6-inch map. It is, however, shown on the 1st. ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map as a triangular area (est. max. dims. L c. 100m NW-SE; Wth c. 50m) with an 'RC Chapel in ruins' across the road to the W. The only feature visible is a piece of limestone from the church which bears late-medieval hammer dressing and has been reused as a grave marker.   Single-arch hump back road bridge over canal, dated 1796. Roughcast coursed rubble limestone walls between roughcast shallow piers with lichen-spotted cut-limestone stringcourses supporting parapets having lichen-spotted cut-limestone coping centred on cut-limestone oval date stone ("1796"). Single elliptical arch with lichen-spotted limestone ashlar voussoirs. Sited spanning Grand Canal with grass towpath to canal.
