• KD027-025 Religious house - unclassified
  Description

  On the gentle N-slope of a shallow E-W valley through a small river flows W. Modern housing has been constructed immediately to the W and NW. In 1837, according to O’Conor’s Ordnance Survey Letter (Herity 2002, 146 (159)), ‘… in Nurney village is pointed out a spot, where, it is said, there was formerly a nunnery. No remains are now observable; but a very small portion of the site, where some of the walls occupied, is said not to have been dug up, or tilled.’ The nunnery is not mentioned by Gwynn and Hadcock (1970). In 1967, burials (KD027-025001-) were uncovered in the vicinity. No surface traces of the nunnery were visible in 1986 (SMR file). In 1987, archaeological trial-trenching (Excavation Licence no. 97E0142) was undertaken in advance of a private development immediately S of the presumed location of the nunnery. No structures, deposits or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered.   Description

  In 1967, human remains, discovered when a field bank was bulldozed, were investigated by the National Museum of Ireland. Further burials were discovered in situ and appeared to be extended inhumations, orientated E-W, in unlined graves. No finds were recovered in association with the burials, but a medieval potsherd (13th to 15th-century) was recovered from disturbed earth nearby. The burials were in the immediate vicinity of a possible nunnery (KD027-025----) and may form part of an associated graveyard.   Description

  On the moderately steep W-slope of ‘Pigeon House Hill’, overlooking a small W-flowing stream c. 35m to the S. A possible nunnery (KD027-025----) and graveyard (KD027-025001-) lie c. 120m to the WNW, and a church (KD027-027----) and graveyard (KD027-027001-) lie c. 125m to the SSW. The 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map records the ‘Site of’ a second castle (KD027-028----) c. 180m to the ESE. In 1837, according to O’Conor’s Ordnance Survey Letter (Herity 2002, 145 (157)), ‘A small (part of the) ‘buttment’ of a Castle is to be seen … It is said that a family of the Fitzgeralds, originally had this castle in their possession.’ A very small portion of mortared masonry (1.5m N-S; 1.1m E-W; H 0.3-1.5m) with some inner and outer facing stones appears to survive in situ.   In level pasture. Visible on an aerial photograph (GSI N 346-7) as a series of some six small, closely associated rectangular enclosures. Slight undulations are visible at ground level (SMR file). In 2005, archaeological trial trenching (http://www.excavations.ie/Pages/Details.php?Year=&County=Kildare&id=13855 Excavation Licence no. 05E1049) at the E limits of the site, in advance of the construction of a private dwelling house, produced no archaeological evidence.   Detached five-bay single-storey lobby entry thatched house, extant 1837, on an L-shaped plan with single-bay single-storey projecting porch abutting single-bay single-storey projecting end bay. Hipped oat straw thatch roof on an L-shaped plan with hipped oat straw thatch roof (porch) abutting hipped oat straw thatch roof (end bay), rope twist ridge with paired exposed stretchers having exposed scallops, yellow brick Running bond dwarf chimney stacks having stepped capping, and exposed stretchers to eaves having exposed scallops. Roughcast battered walls on rendered plinth. Square-headed door opening with concealed dressings framing replacement timber panelled door. Square-headed window openings with concrete or rendered sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows having part exposed sash boxes. Square-headed carriageway (south) with concealed dressings framing timber boarded door. Set back from line of road with rendered piers to perimeter having chamfered capping supporting flat iron gate.
