• KK019-026173 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  An ecclesiastical enclosure for the early medieval church of Domhnach Mór, occupied by St Patrick's graveyard (KK019-026172-) on Patrick Street Upper. The earliest historical reference to the church site occurs in the writings of Tírechán c. 680 where it is referred to as the ‘Martartech’ ('house-of-relics') and this is repeated in the Life of Patrick known as the Vita Tripartitia, written between 895 and 901 (Bradley 1997; Bradley 2000, 13; Farrelly et al. 1993, 79). The site is also identified in the 12th-century Life of Canice (Bradley 1997). The placename ‘Domhnach Mór’ is recognised as a 5th or 6th century borrowing from the Latin, Dominicum, meaning a church. With the rise in the 8th and 9th centuries of St Canice’s church (KK019-026029-), St. Patrick’s became somewhat side-lined and with the diocesan reforms of the 12th century the lands of the church came under the see of Ossory. When the Hightown of Kilkenny was established in the late 12th century the new town parish of St Mary was created and St. Patrick’s became an extra-mural suburb known as the borough of Donaghmore (Bradley 1997). Despite its early importance there is nothing within or near the churchyard that can be said with certainty to be of pre-Norman date. Such sites were generally enclosed within large circular enclosures and traces of an inner ecclesiastical enclosure may be represented by the curving northern boundary wall of the present graveyard. In addition, test-excavations (05E1409) in 2005 by Cóilín Ó Drisceoil of a site on Father Hayden Road 5m outside (S of) the S boundary wall of St Patrick’s graveyard identified a large NE-SW curving ditch (Wth < 4m) containing animal bone (Ó Drisceoil 2005, unpublished; 2006).   Description

  Medieval pits within the former walled burgage plot for 26 Patrick Street, situated to the rear of a mid-18th-century (NIAH 12001026) townhouse and the Kilkenny Theatre’s former location, where it stood between 1902 and 1962. Five pits (max dims 3.8m N-S, 1.8m E-W, D 1m) containing Highhays ware and Kilkenny-type medieval pottery and animal bones, and a possible fosse (Wth 0.9m x D 0.7m) were excavated by Jacinta Kiely ( 99E0165) in advance of a development to the rear of the house (Kiely 1999 unpublished; 2000, 148). The foundations for a post-medieval building were also noted in the excavation. Whilst the site was fully excavated further archaeology relating to the former burgage plot may extend beyond the excavation area to the W.   Description

  Pits excavated in burgage plots that extended 135m W from the rear of 28-29 Lower Patrick Street to the town wall. The present mid-18th-century house (NIAH 12001024) on the street frontage may incorporate earlier fabric, particularly at basement level. John Rocque's 1758 map of Kilkenny depicts a walled burgage plot extending from the rear of a substantial house-complex on Lower Patrick Street. Excavation in the rear plot by Judith Carroll (97E0468, Area 4; 98E0092, Area 7) in advance of development of the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel and offices uncovered to the N and S of a standing garden wall pits, a NNW running stretch of palisade trench (probably a former burgage fence) that continued to the N (KK019-026255-) and linear gullies of medieval date (Carroll 1999, unpublished; 2000, 118-20; 2000, 121-3; 2002, unpublished). The excavator suggested the NNW stretch of the palisade trench may have acted to define the rear (W) of the medieval burgage plots that ran off of Lower Patrick Street, with the area between it and the town wall being open commonage (Carroll 2002, unpublished, 36). Extensively renovated, c.1900, with shopfronts inserted to ground floor and rendered façade enrichments added. Reroofed, c.1975. Renovated and part refenestrated. Pitched roof with replacement artificial slate, c.1975, clay ridge tiles, rendered (shared) chimney stack, rendered coping, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Painted rendered walls with full-height rendered Composite pilasters, c.1900, to upper floors having panelled pilasters to central bays. Square-headed window openings (in bipartite arrangement to left) with cut-stone sills, moulded rendered surrounds, c.1900, and replacement one-over-one timber sash windows, c.1900, to first floor retaining three-over-six timber sash windows to top floor having six-over-six timber sash windows to bipartite opening (replacement uPVC casement windows to rear (west) elevation). Rendered shopfronts, c.1900, to ground floor with pilasters, replacement fixed-pane timber windows (in segmental-headed opening to left ground floor having overlights; in two-light arrangement to right ground floor having overpanels), timber panelled doors, fascia having swept consoles, and stepped cornice.   Terraced four-bay three-storey over basement house, c.1775, on an L-shaped plan with elliptical-headed carriageway to right ground floor, and single-bay three-storey return to west. Extensively renovated, post-1860, with shopfront inserted to ground floor incorporating single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting lower open porch. Now in use as offices. Pitched slate roof behind parapet (hipped slate roof to return) with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, and concealed cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted rendered, ruled and lined wall to front (east) elevation with channelling to ground floor having moulded course supporting frieze, moulded cornice, cut-limestone quoins to ends, moulded course supporting frieze, cut-limestone cornice, rendered parapet having rendered coping, and unpainted rendered walls to remainder. Square-headed window openings (some round-headed window openings to rear (west) elevation) with cut-stone sills, moulded rendered lugged surrounds, c.1900, having elongated keystones supporting open bed pediments to first floor, and replacement two-over-two timber sash windows, c.1900, retaining three-over-six timber sash windows to top floor (six-over-six timber sash windows to rear (west) elevation having fanlights to round-headed openings). Elliptical-headed carriageway to right ground floor with channelled voussoirs, and replacement iron double gates in open work frame. Limestone ashlar shopfront, post-1860, to ground floor incorporating single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting lower open porch (having square-headed door opening with moulded surround, six cut-limestone steps, wrought iron double gates, panelled Ionic flanking pilasters on pedestals, round-headed openings to side elevations (cheeks) with archivolts having keystones, frieze, and moulded cornice to parapet) with pilasters, engaged Ionic columns on advanced plinths, fixed-pane timber windows, timber panelled double doors having decorative wrought iron overpanel (rising over porch), moulded entablature having frieze fascia, consoles, and moulded cornice having modillions.
