  Marked on the 1841 edition of the OS 6-inch map; a circular 'fort' (max. diam c. 45m) clipped by a field fence from SW-NW. No visible surface remains. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. Architectural heritage

• Portlaoise Prison, prison/jail, 1825–1835 · Regional interest
  Description

  Prison complex built c. 1830 to design by William Deane Butler, laid out on the classic panopticon, radiating plan. The first edition OS map depicts the gaol with a central square core and four radiating wings. Castellated entrance gate comprising of carriage arch flanked by octagonal towers, blind screen wall and two smaller corner square plan towers. Ashlar limestone walls with battlements, segmental-headed carriageway arch opening, loop windows at ground floor and first floor to the octagonal towers and large square-headed opening above carriage arch, hood moulding to first floor windows.

• Grattan House, hospital/infirmary, 1805–1810 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey over basement former infirmary, built 1808, five-bay side elevations comprising advanced end bays with first floor Wyatt windows in recessed arch, flanking three recessed bays, renovated c. 2006 with three-storey rear extension, now in use as offices. Replacement hipped slate roof, clay ridge tiles, several chimneystacks with terracotta pots to the inner valleys, limestone ashlar eaves course, replacement metal rainwater goods. Painted pebbledash rendered walls, splayed limestone string course above cement ruled-and-lined rendered walls to basement, square-headed window openings with tooled limestone sills, central three-pointed arched door opening with projecting moulded reveal, door flanked by two pairs of engaged Ionic columns on single plinth block and fluted lintel cornice. Replacement six-over-six timber sash windows, Wyatt windows, some with decorative timber mullions, over front entrance and to the ground and first floors of the advanced end bays to both side elevations, three-over-six timber sash windows to basement, flat-panelled timber shutters to interior, original raised and fielded twelve panelled timber door with timber webbed and interlaced fanlight spanning entire doorcase and timber sidelights. Door opens onto limestone flagged platform with wrought-iron bootscraper and five limestone steps, a further limestone platform and three further steps, all flanked by limestone plinth wall and wrought-iron railings, wall and railing enclose paved basement area. Site has been extensively developed with modern offices and apartment blocks.

  Entrance and boundary wall to former infirmary, erected c. 1808, renovated c. 2006, comprising of a pair of tall rusticated tooled ashlar limestone piers with pyramidal capstones, with a pair of wrought-iron gates, cast-iron fleur-de-lys decoration, pebbledashed screen walls with limestone coping and chamfered limestone plinth, containg flanking square-headed pedestrian gates with rusticated tooled limestone ashlar surrounds and limestone lintels, wrought-iron pedestrian gates matching design of main entrance gates.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1850, with full-height canted bay to west and flat-roof two-bay single-storey extension to east. U-plan hipped slate roof, black clay ridge tiles, four large rendered chimneystacks with heavy moulded cornice and decorative octagonal clay pots, ogee-moulded cast-iron gutter to projecting timber eaves. External render removed revealing random rubble stone walls with moulded rendered eaves course, squared limestone flush quoins, red brick canted bay laid in English garden wall bond, red brick surrounds to all window and door openings, square-headed window openings, raised rendered reveals, limestone sills, round-headed window opening to rear, central segmental-headed door opening with deep reveals to front and rear. Two-over-two timber sash windows with ogee horns and surviving panes of cylinder glass, multi-pane timber sash window with margin lights and etched glass to round headed window, timber panelled doors with bolection mouldings, upper panels glazed. Doors opens onto limestone step, gravel area to front and west with lawn enclosed by rubble stone wall with crenellated coping to the rear, curved rendered walls terminating in tall rendered piers with moulded capstones flank pair of wrought-iron gates on cast-iron posts with ball finials and matching pedestrian gate, on Dublin Road.

  Detached multiple-bay lofted stone former coach house, built c. 1850, now in use as outbuildings. Pitched slate roof, black clay ridge tiles, central gable to loft opening, upvc gutter to timber fascia, cast-iron downpipes. Coursed rough-hewn limestone walling with yellow and red brick surrounds to window, door and loop openings, yellow brick corbels to loft gable, two ground floor openings with brick arches, flat arch brick heads to all other door and window openings. Vertically-sheeted doors, double doors to large arched opening and a half door below the loft opening, cast-iron windows.

  Detached three-bay single-storey national school, dated 1897, renovated 1964 with two flat-roof porches added to either end and a rear single-storey wing added c. 1997. Low pitched slate roof, terracotta ridge tiles, red brick chimneystack with clay pots, cast-iron rainwater goods to overhanging eaves with exposed timber rafter feet, carved purlin ends exposed to either gable end. Felt roof to flat-roof porches, concrete tiles to rear wing. Painted pebbledash walling, smooth rendered plinth course. Square-headed window openings, patent rendered reveals and painted concrete sills. Six-over-six timber sash windows (c.1964) to front elevation. uPVC windows to rear and steel casement windows to side porches. The roof extends over door opening to each porch, supported on steel posts with uPVC glazed door and side panel opening onto concrete step. Sset back from road within its own grounds, Concrete paved front area, tarmac to rear, site enclosed by rubblestone wall to road with cement cupping and pair of steel gates with stile to either side. Former bicycle shed to rear west, now used as classroom c.1964, with flat felt roof, pebbledash rendered walling, and three large square-headed openings now filled in with uPVC glazed panels and doors, with a central oculus to the southern bay

  Detached three-bay two-storey over concealed basement former house, built c. 1705, with pair of single-bay single-storey extensions added to either endand two-storey extension added to rear c.1960, renovated c. 1990, now in use as offices. Pitched artificial slate roof, cement ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks to gable ends, uPVC rainwater goods. Painted pebbledash rendered walls with smooth rendered plinth course, square-headed window openings with stone sills, central round-headed door opening with rendered Gibbsian-style surround and original door frame. uPVC windows and timber panelled door with timber fanlight. Door opens onto two limestone steps to tarmacadam front area, enclosed to west by rubble stone wall and to road by low concrete wall and steel railing c. 2000.

  Description

  Free-standing cast-iron ventilation pipe, erected c. 1900, set within the public pavement to the southeast of the Church of Ss Peter and Paul. Columnar cast-iron pipe having roll-mouldings to base and top of fluted plinth, smooth cast-iron shaft surmounted by roll moulding and corona with dome mesh over.

  Detached three-bay two-storey former school master's house, built c.1895, with central gabled front, sited behind Marlborough National School, in use as house. Two-storey lean-to extension to rear c. 1990. Pitched artificial slate roof with black clay ridge tiles and a central gable rising from front elevation and red brick chimneys to gable end. Plastic gutter on exposed timber rafter feet with cast-iron downpipe. Timber bargeboard to main front gable and plastic bargeboard to side gable. Painted pebbledash rendered walling with smooth rendered plinth course. Square-headed window openings, patent rendered reveals with painted stone sills, uPVC windows on both floors. Lean-to slate canopy to front entrance with exposed timber frame and stop-chamfer detailing. Square-headed door opening with replacement timber glazed door. Site enclosed with rubblestone wall to south and west, and concrete block wall to east. Steel gates on iron posts to Stradbally Road.

  Detached four-bay two-storey house, built c. 1825, with large front glazed porch, two-storey return to south and attached sunroom, two-storey flat roof extension to north c. 1970. Former ancillary building in courtyard to rear c. 1825 now a dwelling. Hipped artificial slate roof, gabled to return, clay ridge tiles and pair of rendered chimneystacks with terracotta pots, plastic gutter and some cast-iron downpipes on timber fascia. Painted ruled-and-lined rendered walling, square-headed window openings evenly spaced with painted stone sills, single-pane timber sash windows with ogee horns. Square-headed door opening with replacement double-leaf timber panelled door and rectangular overlight opening into later traditional-style glazed porch having red and black clay tiles to floor. Original flat panelled timber door to rear. Steel casement windows to return. Flat-roof sunroom to south elevation. Site enclosed to front by wrought-iron railing on low rendered wall with matching gate. A screen wall to north encloses a rear yard with a lean-to building, built c.2006. Front gravel area enclosed by estate railings continuing along front avenue to Stradbally Road. A paddock with mature trees is enclosed to the north by cement rendered wall with rendered piers and cast-iron gates.

  Detached five-bay two-storey former rectory, built c. 1800, with a three-bay two-storey wing with single-storey canted-bay window built c. 1890, front porch c. 1930, extension to north elevation c. 1980. Rear courtyard with range of two-storey outbuildings c.1800 enclosed to north by screen wall with tall stone archway opening. Set back from road in mature landscaped grounds. Hipped slate roofs with red brick chimneystacks having octagonal clay pots and clay ridge tiles. Bowed roof to south elevation. Replacement metal rainwater goods on overhanging eaves with paired timber sprockets. Painted rough-cast rendered walling, square-headed window openings with limestone sills, two-over-two timber sash windows with ogee horns. Smooth rendered surrounds with stop chamfer detail to ground floor of south elevation, canted-bay having single-pane timber sash windows and decorative cast-iron gutter. Three-over-six timber sash window to rear over porch. Hardwood casement windows to remainder including front porch. Flat felt roof to front porch, coursed stone walling and hardwood glazed door. Round-headed door opening with ribbed timber pilasters and double-leaf timber glazed and panelled door. Pitched corrugated-iron roof to outbuilding with slate to central pediment. Replacement metal rainwater goods. Painted rough cast rendered walling. Limestone ashlar oculi to upper storey, square-headed door and window openings to ground floor with vertically sheeted doors, two-over-two timber sash window and one timber casement window.
