• LA018-002 Church
  Description

  St Colman Ban may have founded an early church here and he is commemorated on the 19th October (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 244-5). A late medieval nave (L c. 11.1m, Wth c. 6.6m) and chancel (L c. 6.55m, Wth c. 4.5m, wall T c. 1.4m) church built of rough limestone blocks randomly coursed. The E window has been replaced by a modern entrance. The original doorway was possibly in the S wall. Plain rectangular window in W gable. The nave and chancel are divided by a segmental rounded arch (Wth c. 2.4m) and the interior of the nave is 1.2m lower than that of the chancel. All visible headstones in surrounding irregularly shaped graveyard, postdate 1700. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran.   Description

  On very high ground overlooking valley. St. Colman Ban may have founded an early church here. He is commemorated on the 19th October (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 244-5). A late medieval church (LA018-002-) with divided nave and chancel built with rough limestone blocks randomly coursed. All visible headstones post date 1700 AD. Roughly D-shaped graveyard (int. dims. 35m N-S; 40m E-W) enclosed by a stone wall containing post 1700 AD memorials. Church in centre of graveyard.   In an upland area. A circular area (diam. c. 25.8m) defined by a bank (Wth c. 2.5m; int. H c. 0.2m, ext. H c. 0.8m) and slight remains of a fosse. No evidence of original entrance.
