  Description

  Marked as an oval enclosure (max. dim. c. 44m NW-SE) on the 1906 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Remains of a flat-topped bank (H c. 1.7m) are visible at W and NW. No evidence of fosse or original entrance. The N section of the site has been destroyed as a result of the construction of a golf clubhouse on it. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. • LA024-029 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  This levelled monument is indicated on the 1838 edition of the OS six-inch map as a raised circular platform (diam. c. 60m) defined by a scarp which is enclosed by an inner fosse and outer bank. The overall diameter of the site measures c. 120m E-W. On the OS 25-inch map the monument is depicted as a circular platform defined by a scarp which is enclosed by an inner fosse and tow outer banks with an intervening fosse. A gap is indicated on the E side of the central platform which may indicate an entrance feature. The levelled monument is only visible today as differential growth in the grass indicating the line of the fosse (Wth c. 5.5m), no other surface remains survive. Reference to a rath (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 156). The files of the National Museum of Ireland records that in October 1953 human remains (LA024-029001-) were discovered during bulldozing of a ringfort (LA024-029) at Rathmoyle near Abbeyleix, Co. Laois. According the NMI file the 'ringfort covered an area of approximately 23/4 acres, and the banks varied in height from 2.4m (external bank) to 0.9m (internal bank)' (NMI File).   Description

  The files of the National Museum of Ireland records that in October 1953 human remains (LA024-029001-) were discovered during bulldozing of a ringfort (LA024-029) at Rathmoyle near Abbeyleix, Co. Laois (Cahill & Sikora 2011, Vol. 2, 490-1). The remains were discovered in one of the outer banks of a trivallate ringfort. The bones, representing the remains of at least two skeletons, one of which lay extended, were very fragmentary. The site was visited by Ellen Prendergast. No grave goods or structural stones were noticed in the vicinity of the burial, although a horse tooth was later recovered from the site.   Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey courthouse, c.1820, on a rectangular plan. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks having corbelled stepped capping, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Rendered, ruled and lined walls on chamfered plinth with rusticated quoins to corners. Square-headed central door opening approached by flight of ten cut-limestone steps, lugged doorcase supporting "Cyma Recta"- or "Cyma Reversa"-detailed pediment framing timber panelled door. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, and lugged surrounds framing six-over-six timber sash windows. Set back from line of street on an elevated site with cast-iron railings to perimeter centred on cast-iron double gates.
