• LE036-023 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated towards the N end of a NW-SE drumlin ridge, it is described as a ‘Danish Rath’ on an estate map (Wogan 1750, 25). The rath is described as ‘Crockalissa’ on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is an overgrown circular area (diam. 43m N-S; 42.7m E-W; nt. diam. 37m E-W; 36m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 4.5m at E to 8.5m at N; int. H 0.3m at E to 1.4m at N; ext. H 1.7-2.4m) and a re-cut flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 7.5-9.5m; Wth of base 4.3m at E to 7m at W; ext. D 0.3-1.2m). The fosse is not recut NW-N and here is round-bottomed (Wth of top 6.3m; ext. D 1.2m), and the original fill is visible as a berm (Wth 1.4m) at the outer base of the bank at E. The entrance (Wth of base 2.8m) and causeway (Wth of top 3m) are at E.   Description

  Situated in a low-lying landscape with an E-W portion of the Black River c. 10m to the S. It is depicted only on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as ‘Toberearly’. This is now a small overgrown hollow (dims c. 1.8m x 1.5m) but no information relating to its use is forthcoming, The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J.
