Description
Located at the bottom of a N-facing slope and on the S bank of a small E-W stream c. 200m from where it enters Lough Allen at a bay known locally as Tommy Simpson's Lake. A two-chambered building (int. dims 6.4m x c. 4m), now ruined, shows traces of ironworking (vitrified material), and is probably 18th-century in date. It is situated within an overgrown disused quarry which is open to the N where slag was used to create a level platform (diam. c. 25m). It is thought that pikes for the 1798 rebellion were made at a forge here. (Clancy and Forde 1980, 35-6) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). Description
Situated on top of a drumlin. This is a grass-covered circular area (dims 33m N-S; 31.5m E-W; int. diam. 30m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 5-6m; int. H 0.4-0.7m; ext. H 1.6-1.8m), which is reduced to a scarp (H 1.8m) NE-SE, and an external fosse which is best preserved W-N (Wth of top 6.8m; Wth of base 2-3m; D 0.4m) but represented elsewhere by a band of lush vegetation (Wth 2-3m). The entrance (Wth 3.2m) is at SE. The monument is circumscribed by a field bank W-N and the fosse is clipped by a NE-SW field bank E-S. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003).
