  Description

  Situated on the E-facing slope of a drumlin. This is a grass and rush-covered circular area (int. diam. 38m E-W; 36m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.2m) which is reduced to a scarp at E, and an external fosse (Wth of base 3.1m; ext. D 0.3m). There is a modern entrance (Wth of base 2m) at NE. The rath (LE031-069----) is c. 35m to the NE. Archaeological monitoring (01E0106) of a pipe-laying scheme in the village of Drumsna came within 100m of the rath at the closest point, but did not produce any related material (Read 2002, 2003).   Description

  Situated on the slight E-facing slope of a drumlin. This is a grass and rush-covered circular area (int. diam. 29m) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; H 0.2m), with traces of an external fosse at N. The original entrance is not identified, and the rath (LE031-068----) is c. 35m to the SW. Archaeological testing (94E0051) c. 20m to the E on the line of the N4 failed to produce any related material (Opie 1994, 5, fig. 9; 1995). • LE031-085 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on a gentle W-facing slope within the village of Drumsna. A circular enclosure is depicted on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map with the ruins of a Presbyterian Meeting house in the interior. The rath is a circular area (int. diam. 39m NW-SE) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 3.3m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.75m) with an external V-shaped fosse (Wth of top 2.1m; ext. D 0.3m). There is an entrance (Wth 2.5m) and causeway at NNW which leads to the Fair Green of Drumsna village. The rath is bisected by a N-S field wall, and the ruins of the meeting house are in the interior. This is a roofless structure (int. dims 15.6m NW-SE; 6.2m NE-SW) with walls almost complete (Wth 0.75m; H 3-5m) and a single doorway in the NW gable. It has headstones of the Whitelaw and Parke families dating from 1819, and the African explorer, Surgeon General Thomas Heazle Parke (1857-93), is also buried here. Archaeological testing (01E0069) immediately to the NW (Read 2003) and testing (02E1235) to the SE (Halpin 2004) produced no related material.   Description

  Located on a gentle W-facing slope within the village of Drumsna. The rath (LE031-085001-) contains the ruins of a Presbyterian Meeting House according to the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This is a roofless structure (int. dims 15.6m NW-SE; 6.2m NE-SW) with walls almost complete (Wth 0.75m; H 3-5m) and a single doorway in the NW gable.   Description

  Marked as a circular enclosure only on the OS 25-inch map. This site is located just off the crest of the SE-facing slope of a drumlin. It is visible as a circular area (diam. 25.2m NE-SW; 23.4m NW-SE) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth 4-8m; int. H 0.1-0.3m; ext. H 0.1-0.3m) S-N-E that is reduced to a scarp (at SE: H 0.4m) elsewhere. This perimeter is surrounded by a fosse (Wth of top 4.3-7m; Wth of base 2.5-3.8m; D 0.1m) W-N-E which is visilbe as a wet area elsewhere. There is no visible entrance.   Located towards the top of the SE-facing slope of a drumlin. It was first identified by S. Curran as part of an M.A. Thesis with University College Dublin using a LiDAR survey dataset commissioned by Leitrim County Council and the NRA. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 27m NE-SW; 25.2m NW-SE) defined by a slight bank (at N: Wth 4.6m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.1m) NNW-NE that is reduced to a scarp (H 0.1m at SW to 0.4-0.5m NE-SE) elsewhere, and a fosse (Wth of top 5.1-6.5m; Wth of base 2.1-2.4m; int. D 0.1m; ext. D 0.2-0.4m) SW-NE.   Located towards the top of the S-facing slope of a drumlin. This is a grass-covered oval area (int. dims. 28.75m NE-SW; 22.75m NW-SE) defined by a round-topped earthen bank (Wth 4.75m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.95m) and a flat-bottomed external fosse (Wth at base 2.9m; D 0.5m) which becomes indistinct at S. Rath (LE031-086----) is c. 100m to the W. Archaeological testing (02E1235) c. 100m to the SE produced no archaeological material (Halpin 2004).   Situated on a gentle S-facing slope of a drumlin. It is not depicted on any edition of the OS 6-inch map but it is visible as a circular feature on aerial photographs (OSAP: 2/8548-9) and some later series (OSAP: 2000; 2005). This is a grass-covered circular area (diam. 65m E-W; 62m N-S) defined by a fosse (Wth of base 2.9m; int. D 0.5m; ext. D 0.2m) SW-N and by a scarp (max. H 0.4m) elsewhere. The original entrance is not identified and the perimeter is slightly intruded on by a house and garden at NW.   Situated in reclaimed pasture on the flood-plain of a NW-SE section of the River Shannon, with the river c. 50m to the SW. It is depicted as a rectangular enclosure or field with a structure in the centre on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map and as a rectangular field on the 1945 revision. This is a grass-covered rectangular area (dims 24m NE-SW; 23m NW-SE) defined by the remains of a fosse at SW (Wth 7m) and NW (Wth 4m), with the remains of a field bank at SE and a scarp at NE.   Description

  Located on a rise in the flood-plain of the N-S River Shannon, although the ground rises c. 50m to the E. It is on the E bank and the river diverts around it a little N-W, so it may be on a plug of rock-outcrop, although none is visible at the surface. It was first identified by S. Curran from a LIDaR survey conducted for Leitrim County Council in advance of a proposed by-pass on the N4 around Carrick-on-Shannon. This is an oval grass-covered area (dims 34.4m N-S; 26.1m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3-3.2m; int. H 0.1m at W to 0.8m at N; ext. H 1.5m at W to 2.2m at N) with bushes W-N, and by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 8.9-9.4m; int. D 0.4-0.6m; ext. D 0.1-0.5m) N-SSE, but the original perimeter cannot be traced elsewhere. The limit is defined by an E-W field bank at S (L c. 25m) and a N-S scarp (L c. 22m) at W. There is no visible entrance.   Description

  Situated in improved pasture at the bottom of a W-facing slope which falls gently to the N-S River Shannon c. 10m to the W. It was first identified by Susan Curran as part of an M.A. thesis with University College Dublin using a LiDAR survey dataset commissioned by Leitrim County Council and the National Roads Authority. This is a rectangular area (dims 30m E-W; 28m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 6.9m; Wth or top 3.0m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.5m) on the N-side, which is reduced to a scarp, best preserved (Wth 3.6m; H 1.0m) at W (downslope) on the other sides. There is no visible fosse or entrance.   Situated in improved pasture on a slight SE-facing slope with a loop of a W-E section of the River Shannon within 300-400m ESE-W. It was first identified by Susan Curran as part of an M.A. thesis with University College Dublin using a LiDAR survey dataset commissioned by Leitrim County Council and the National Roads Authority. This is a subcircular area (diam. 27m E-W; 25m N-S) defined by a slight scarp (at SE: Wth 4.0m; H 0.55m) NE-S-WNW, and a possible fosse (Wth c. 5.0m; D 0.05m) is traceable WNW-N-NE.   Description

  Situated on low-lying ground between the SW corner of Gortconnellan Lough c. 250m to N and an E-W section of the river Shannon c. 300m to S, and on the line of the N4. Archaeological excavation (94E0158) in advance of roadworks uncovered an irregularly shaped trough (dims 1.6m x 1.1m; D 0.25-0.3m) filled with an organic peat and broken and burnt sandstone.   Description

  Detached gable-fronted single-cell Roman Catholic church, built in 1845, with two-stage entrance bell tower and with two-storey extension to chancel end. Set within its own grounds. Pitched tiled roof with pinnacles and cast-iron cross finial. Castellations to front gable and tower and pinnacles to tower, with entrance porch to ground with date plaque above. Pebbledashed walls with ashlar limestone dressings. Stained glass windows and timber battened double door with stained glass tympanum in pointed-arched openings. Limestone hood mouldings to front façade and to tower. Blind windows to ground floor and louvred opes to first floor of tower. Grave markers to churchyard.

  Description

  Enclosed Methodist graveyard, founded c.1820 and located within an early medieval ringfort. Marble bust and plaque commemmorating Robert Strawbridge, founder of the Methodist church in North America, at the entrance. Graveyard is no longer in use. Variety of grave markers dating from 1820s to 1914. Limestone built entranceway, c.2000, with cast-iron gate and tooled limestone steps.

  Gates and gate lodge, built c.1850 at the former entrance to Mountcampbell House. Now disused. Square-profiled tooled limestone gate piers with tooled caps and cast-iron gates hung from decorative fist-shape hinges. Pedestrian gate to north-east. Detached two-bay single-storey roughcast rendered gate lodge with chamfered corners and hipped slate roof having over-sailing eaves. Now derelict.

  Corner-sited detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1800, with pubfront and return. Pitched tiled roof with rendered chimneystacks. Ruled-and-lined render to walls with quoins. Timber sash and replacement uPVC windows with sills and stucco surrounds. Timber panelled door to house with decorative fanlight in block-and-start surround. Timber battened door to pub with with petal fanlight. Display window with mid-twentieth century fascia and stucco surround. Stone outbuildings to rear. Building fronts directly onto street.

Pitched tiled roof with ashlar chimneystacks and dormer window to rear. Roughcast rendered walls. Block-and-start stone window surrounds with replacement uPVC windows to façade and timber sash windows to rear. Replacement vertically-divided timber panelled door with cobweb fanlight in carved round-headed opening with tooled stone surround. Two-storey outbuildings to rear of site, which is bounded by railings on cut stone plinth with fluted stone piers.

  Detached eight-bay single-storey former national school, built in 1891, now vacant. Pitched slate roof with over-sailing eaves with timber brackets, terracotta ridge tiles and cast-iron roof vents to ridge. Roughcast rendered walls with cast-iron rainwater goods. Cast-iron vents to walls. Timber casement windows with tooled limestone sills and timber battened door with overlight. Date plaque to front elevation.
