• LI028-142 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on gentle NE-facing slope. Circular area (diam. c. 25m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.95m; ext. H 1.8m) with external fosse (Wth 1.9m; D 0.8m). Bank is best preserved WSW->NNW. Fosse evident all round though deepest and waterlogged E->S. At NNW cattle accessing interior have word gap across enclosing element (Wth c. 2.5m). Field boundary skirts external edge of fosse N->NE. Shallow drain on NNE-SSW axis opens into fosse at SSW. Apart from narrow band around perimeter, interior is covered by dense overgrowth. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011

  Description

  In pasture, on gentle SSE-facing slope. Circular area (diam. c. 30m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.55m; ext. H 1.5m) with external fosse (D 1.05m; Wth 3m). Outer edge of fosse is truncated by field boundary and drain NNW->NE; drain feeds water into fosse at NE and fosse is waterlogged except W->NNW.   In level pasture, on crest of low rise. Circular area (42.6m N-S; 43m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 1.25m; Wth 2.3m). Scarp is most pronounced SE->NE but very slight NE->SE.   Description

  In pasture, on gentle NE-facing slope. Circular area (37.8m N-S; 36m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 1.45m; Wth 4.6m) with an external fosse (D 0.7m; Wth 2.8m). Entrance (Wth 4.2m) with causeway across fosse at ESE. Field boundary truncates enclosing element N->ENE. Interior, under pasture, slopes gently down from edge to centre.   Description

  In level pasture. Oval area (16m NE-SW; 22m NW-SE) defined by scarped edge (H 0.75m; Wth 3.35m) with external fosse (D 0.2m; Wth 8.35m). Earthen field boundary, overgrown with bushes, overlies top of scarper edge except at NE, ESE and SW where there are gaps in the boundary. Level interior covered by tall grasses.   Description

  In level pasture, 253m N of Ballyfraley stream, a ringfort (LI036-032 ----) lies 35m to the S. Not marked on OSi historic maps. Identified by Hugh Carey during examination of aerial photographs (Bing maps aerial photograph 2014) and described as a possible ringfort. Levelled monument visible as circular-shaped cropmark (dims. c. 37m N-S; 42m E-Wm) from SE-S-W-NW, delimited from NW-N-E-SE by a curved field boundary running NW-SE on OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-2012 and on Google Earth orthoimages.
