- LI012-022 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, atop ridge. Roughly circular area (29.5m N-S; 32.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank with external fosse (D 0.9m; Wth 2m). Bank (int. H 1.3m ext. H 32.5m), best preserved NW->SE, becomes scarp-like at S (H 0.65m; Wth 4m). Fosse, best preserved SE->SSW, shallows out at SSW where machinery was used to clear vegetation overgrowth. Field boundary runs along external top edge of fosse SW->NW, so that enclosure located in NW corner of field; enclosing element masked by dense overgrowth of briars and thorn SW->NW. Causeway entrance (Wth 3.6m) at E. Interior, under rough pasture, slopes down very gently to E. In pasture, atop S end of ridge. Roughly circular area (35.7m N-S; 34.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.6m), best preserved SW->N. Bank overgrown with elder trees and briars, and littered with loose stones. Entrance at SSW (Wth 3m). Level interior, under pasture. Description
In pasture, atop limestone crag. Roughly circular area (33.9m N-S; 37m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.05) W->NNE and ENE->WSW, and defined by scarped edge (H 0.85m; Wth 4.1m) WSW->W and NNE->ENE. Dry-stone wall, forming field boundary, incorporates bank E->WSW. Level interior, under pasture, is littered with loose stone; its surface was skimmed by bulldozer in 1996 to clear scrub. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
