- LI024-064 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
In wet unimproved pasture, 170m SE of Glenatrahaun Stream. A ring-barrow (LI024-214----) lies 50m to S. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a circular-shaped area (diam. 16m) defined by a scarp (H 0.75m), with fosse (Wth 4.55m; base Wth 2m; D 0.65m) visible from SE-S-W-N-NNE and an outer bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.65m; ext. H 0.25m) is evident from SE-S-W-N-NNE. A raised oval shape area (3m N-S; 5.5m E-W) defined by scarp (Wth 1.3m; H 0.5m) is visible in S quadrant of the interior and could be the remains of a small ring-ditch. A field boundary lies to the immediate W of the monument. Ring-barrow is visible as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork on ASI aerial photograph (ASIAP 132, 33, 34 taken 23/058/2000 and 05/01/2003). Well preserved monument visible on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018. See attached sketch plan and cross-sections surveyed and drawn by the ASI. - LI024-214 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
In wet pasture, 260m S of Glenatrahaun Stream and the townland boundary with Ballynagally. A ring-barrow (LI024-064----) lies 50m to N and an enclosure (LI024-215----) is located abutting the ring-barrow to the E. The ring-barrow is not depicted on historic OSi maps, but is visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 30.1; AP 4/3631) as a circular ring-barrow (ext. diam. c. 25m), the site is characterised by a central wide interior surrounded by a fosse (Wth 2m). The Bruff survey identified a central mound (Bruff 30.2) within the interior of the site. Recorded by ASI aerial photographic survey 23/08/2000 (ASIAP (132) 34. Description
In wet pasture, 265m S of Glenatrahaun Stream and the townland boundary with Ballynagally. A ring-barrow (LI024-064----) lies 55m to N and an enclosure (LI024-214----) is located abutting the enclosure to the W. The enclosure is not depicted on historic OSi maps but is faintly visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 30.3; AP 4/3631) as a U-shaped enclosure (ext. diam. c. 22m). Faintly visible on the ASI aerial photographic survey 23/08/2000 (ASIAP (132) 33). The enclosure is not visible on the most recent Google Earth orthoimages taken 18/11/2018. Description
In wet unimproved pasture, 10m W of a stream. A ring-barrow (LI024-214----) lies 150m to NW. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped platform defined by a scarp. Surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a raised roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 26m NNE-SSW; 24m ESE-WNW) defined by a scarp and outer fosse (base Wth 9.5m; D 0.75m) from E-NW. The raised interior (max. H. 2.65m) has a possible ring-barrow in S quadrant. The monument is visible as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork surrounded by a ditch overgrown with rushes on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimages. Description
In the S quadrant of large barrow or burial mound (LI033-015001-). Surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a sub-circular shaped area (4.2m N-S; 4.5m E-W) defined by a scarp (Wth 1m; H 1.2m), fosse (base Wth 0.5m) and outer bank (Wth 2.75m; H 0.2m). Visible as a roughly circular-shaped depression (diam. c. 4m) in the S of interior on OSi orthophotos 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018. In wet pasture, 75m W of a field boundary running N-S. Enclosure (LI033-062002-) lies 50m to NE. Not depicted on historic OSi maps. Curvilineaer cropmark identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 125.01; AP 4/3631) as a possible enclosure. Visible as a faint cropmark truncated by a field drain running NW-SE on OSi orthophotos taken between 2005-12. Not visible on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/09/2020. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 125.02; AP 4/3631) as a sub-circular-shaped area (diam. c. 40m) defined by a fosse from SE-N-E with a central circular depression or possible ditch barrow (LI033-119----). Not visible on OSi orthophotos taken between 2005-12. Visible as a area clear of vegetation on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/09/2020. The monument is intersected at E by a drainage ditch/farm track running NW-SE. Doubtful antiquity, may be a drainage ditch rather than an antiquity.
