  Description

  In level pasture. Sub-circular area (21m NNW-SSE; 17m ENE-WSW) defined by the remains of a partially levelled scarped edge (H 0.45m; Wth 4.2m). Eastern arc truncated by drain and field boundary NE-ESE. Traces of external fosse (basal Wth 4.5m; total Wth 9.5m; D 0.2m) SE-WNW.   Description

  In level grassy clearing within deciduous plantation. Oval area (20m N-S; 14m E-W) defined by partially levelled scarped edge (Wth 5.5m; H 0.85m), with an external fosse (basal Wth 1.0m; total Wth 10.1m; D 0.45) are best preserved SE-NW but shallower NW-SE, largely infilled at E where choked with tall grasses, nettles and wild irises (yellow flag) intermittently.   Description

  In rough, damp pasture, occupying most of a small field. Roughly circular area (28m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by scarped edge (Wth 6m; H 1.75m) SW-NNW and a more gentle scarp (Wth 1.5m; H 0.3m) NNW-SW. Wide, flat-bottomed external fosse (basal Wth 8m; total Wth 15.75m; D 0.4m) SW-NNW. Fosse area and rest of exterior covered in dense growth of rushes. • LI023-040 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Depicted on the 1840 OS map as a small rectangular structure near the E end of an oval mound (c. 35m E-W; c. 20m N-S) but marked 'site of' on the 1928 OS map. According to Westropp (1906-7, 91) this O'Haynes' castle was 'repaired by Mr Hannan before 1826, and was levelled before 1840'. There is now no evident trace of the castle. • LI023-040001 Sheela-na-gig
  Description

  Sheela-na-gig (LI005-017180-) now located in the Hunt Museum in Limerick City (Reg. No. HCM 033). According to McMahon and Roberts this sheela-na-gig was discovered by workers while repairing a culvert on a small stream c. 100m from Black Castle (LI023-040----) where the carving (dims. 0.48m x 0.33m) had been rebuilt into the fabric of the roadside wall (McMahon & Roberts 2001, 120). It has been suggested that this sheela-na-gig may have come from the nearby castle (LI023-040---) when it was pulled down in the 19th century. Described by Freitag as a stone (dims. H 0.5m; Wth 0.34m) with figure ‘skilfully carved in flat relief on local limestone; damaged, head missing, and legs from thigh downwards and left hand also broken away. Trunk and limbs unusually plump without signs of emaciation; well shaped droopy but proportional breasts. Arms passing behind legs; right hand lifting lower part of thigh. Deeply incised naval and oval pudenda; shape of latter exaggerated, and seems to be split at upper end. A groove is cut vertically downwards below pudenda’ (Freitag 2004, 126).   In rough, level pasture with coniferous plantation to N. Circular area (dims. 19.5m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by earthen bank (Wth 13.3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.9m) almost reduced in places to a scarp, with an external fosse (basal Wth 3.65m; total Wth 14.35m; D 0.6m). Possible entrance (basal Wth 5m; total Wth 10m) at ESE.   On flat pasture 1km NE of the Camoge River. The townland boundary with Knockcorragh is 45m to S. The church and graveyard at Caherelly (LI023-085001/2-) is 320m to WSW. A mound (LI023-208----) lies 200m to NE, ring-barrows (LI023-216001/3-) 150m to E and an enclosure (LI023-217----) 150m to S. The ring-barrow is not depicted on historic OSi maps or visible on the OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 271; AP 4/3658) as a ring-barrow.
