• LI024-080 Earthwork
  Description

  On a dry piece of ground in otherwise wet, level pasture, with reasonably good views in all directions. The Reask River lies 200m to W. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a subcircular-shaped earthwork. Surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a circular-shaped area (dims. 15m N-S; 13m E-W) defined by the remains of a poorly preserved scarp (Wth 12m; H 1.1m). The interior is uneven and grass covered. A land drain running N-S flanks the E side of the monument. Monument is visible as a roughly oval-shaped cropmark on Google Earth orthoimage taken 18/11/2018. See attached plan and cross-sections surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • LI024-081 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Site of Castle Cluggin described in 1840 as follows; 'the site of a Castle said to have belonged first to Brian O'gCuanach and afterwards to the Earl of Thomond, is shown in the Townland of Castle Cluggin. It is not noticed in the Field Name Books, but it should be shown on the Ordnance Map. It is mentioned in the MS. Pedigree of the O'Briens, Trin[ity] Col.[lege]. H.1,7.' (O'Flanagan 1929, 130). Westropp (1906-7, 104) recorded the following details about a Castlecluggin; '1302 Tohtcloggin. 1655 Cloggin marked, but no C[astle]. shown (Petty, 67). It may, perhaps, be Ballyvalode, as the townlands adjoin [see next section, but seems to be a very uncertain site]'. In pasture, on a gentle NW-facing slope. No surface remains visible of levelled castle. Shallow hollow (dims. 10m N-S; 12m E-W) with natural outcrop protruding from sod, indicates that this area has been quarried. • LI024-082001 Church
  Description

  Westropp (1904-5, 439) recorded the following details on Tuoghcluggin; ‘Tohtclogyn, in Tipperary Deanery, 1302; Twogh Cloigin Church, down, 1615; Tuath an Chluigin, ( country of the little bell ' (O'Donovan). Site - It was levelled before 1840. Tobernacruhauneeve [LI024-083----], ' the well of the Holy Cross,' was near the graveyard. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that although this 'is called a Church, it is really a graveyard, without any remains of a church in it' (OSNB, 1690-1). Within graveyard (LI024-082002-). No visible surface trace. Area of briars may obscure ruins. Long, rectangular pillar stone noted within, may be a gravemarker. Other low, uninscribed stones visible in small cleared area. Named 'Tuoghcluggin Church (site of)' on current edition OS 6-inch map. Holy well (LI024-083----) c. 150m to E. • LI024-082002 Graveyard
  Description

  In pasture to W of public road. Site of Tuoghcluggin Church (LI024-082001-) stood in SE quadrant of graveyard which consists of a sub-rectangular area (dims. 28m N-S; 51m E-W) enclosed by stonewall (H 1.2-1.5m). A small sub-rectangular shaped area (dims. 28m N-S; 22m E-W) defined by scarp (Wth 3.15m; H 0.95m) within W-half of graveyard may be remains of an earlier enclosure. Two inscribed headstones within, earliest dates to 1779 and numerous uninscribed gravemarkers. Tobernacrohaneeve holy well (LI024-083----) c. 150m to E. Site of Castle Cluggin (LI024-081---) lies 135m to W.
