• LI024-074 Designed landscape - folly
  Description

  On steep NNE-facing slope, on the demesne lands of Derk House which stands 360m to SSW. A circular tower or folly (LI024-075----) stands 100m to SSW. Not depicted as an antiquity on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a subcircular-shaped tree-planted enclosure. Surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a circular-shaped area (diam. 12m) enclosed by intermittent traces of a low earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 0.17m) from ESE-S-W reduced to a scarp (H 1.35m) visible from W-N-E-ESE with traces of a possible fosse at SW. The interior has a steep NNE-facing slope and there is a large conglomerate boulder (H 3m) in the N quadrant. The interior and bank are planted with Beech trees. Probable tree-ring of Derk House demesne. Monument is visible as a roughly circular-shaped tree-planted earthwork Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. • LI024-075 Designed landscape - folly
  Description

  In a small coppice of mature Beech trees, on the demesne lands of Derk House which stands 275m to SW, with excellent views from NNW-N-E-S. Tree-ring (LI024-074----) lies 100m to NNE. Annotated 'Tower' and depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a circular-shaped building. Surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a three-storey, circular-shaped, roofless tower constructed of rubble stone. The ground floor has a base batter and the brick around the top may have formed crenellations. The ground floor door opening has a segmental arch of brick and this style is carried through to the window openings. The walls are rendered on the interior and on the exterior. The interior is hollow, however it has a fireplace opening and a flue in the rear wall, opposite the ground floor entrance. Multiple window openings would suggest that this tower was built as a folly on the demesne lands of Derk House. Monument is obscured by mature trees on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018.   On undulating pasture 90m SE from the townland boundary with Cloghaderreen. One of three barrows (LI024-199001- and LI024-200----) outlying a ring-barrow cemetery (LI024-219/220----; LI024-325/-332----) 300m to W. The pond-barrow is not depicted on historic OSi maps, but is visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 9; AP 4/3626) as a circular pond-barrow (ext. diam. c. 24m).   Description

  On undulating pasture 90m ESE from the townland boundary with Cloghaderreen. One of three barrows (LI024-199001/2-) outlying a ring-barrow cemetery (LI024-219/220----; LI024-325/-332----) 300m to W. The ring-barrow is not depicted on historic OSi maps, but is visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 11; AP 4/3626) as a circular ring-barrow (ext. diam. c. 10m), some doubt was expressed on the veracity of the image identifying the site on a copy of the aerial labelled ‘not clear’. The ring-barrow, however is also visible on the most recent Google Earth orthoimage taken 18/11/2018. Fields enclosed by drainage ditches associated with estate belonging to Derk House located 800m to NE. One of a complex of 14 barrows (LI033-036001/009; LI033-090/91-; LI033-121/122-; LI033-154----) concentrated in the S half of Derk townland with the closest barrow (LI033-036009-) immediately to the S. Monument depicted on OSi 25-inch map as a circular-shaped platform (diam. 2C. 7m). Surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a circular-shaped area (dims. 24m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by a shallow fosse (Wth 4.55m; D 0.2m) best preserved from WNW-ENE and from ESE-WSW. A linear depression running E-W to immediate S is one of a number of drainage ditches. Fields enclosed by drainage ditches associated with estate belonging to Derk House located 600m to NE. The most N of a cluster of 14 barrows (LI033-036001/009; LI033-090/91-; LI033-121-122----; LI033-154----) concentrated in the S half of Derk townland with the closest (LI033-036003-) 12m to the NNW. Not depicted on any OSi maps. Surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a sub-circular-shaped area (dims. 4.5m N-S; 5m E-W) enclosed by a shallow fosse (Wth 3.05m-3.85m; D 0.12m-0.15m) and a low bank (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.17). A linear depression running N-S 30m to E is one of a number of similar drainage ditches in surrounding fields. Fields enclosed by drainage ditches associated with estate belonging to Derk House located 600m to NE. One of a cluster of 14 barrows (LI033-036001/009-; LI033-090/91-; LI033-121-122----; LI033-154----) concentrated in the S half of Derk townland with the closest (LI033-036002-) 12m to the SSE. Not depicted on OSi maps. Surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a oval-shaped area (dims. 6m N-S; 4m E-W) enclosed by a shallow fosse (Wth 3.4m-4.2m; D 0.15m-0.17m) and a low bank (Wth 3.9m; int. H 0.15m; ext.   Description

  In reclaimed pasture, on the demesne lands of Derk House located 490m to NNE. In the centre of a cluster of 14 barrows (LI033-036001/009; LI033-090/91-; LI033-121/122-; LI033-154----) concentrated in the S half of Derk townland. Regular pattern of linear ditches combined with upstanding field boundaries clearly visible on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12. The linear ditches running roughly parallel to each other on a NW-SE axis feeding into drainage ditches indicated on OSi historic maps. Surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a linear mound (L 90m; Wth 3.5m; H 0.2m) running NW-SE defined by a channel (Wth 3.4m; D 0.25m) on either side with a similar mound and drains running perpendicular. Remains of drainage channels associated with land reclamation on the demesne lands of Derk House.   In improved pasture on the demesne lands of Derk House, located 600m to N. Within a cluster of barrows (LI033-036001-/009-; LI033-090/091-; LI033-121/122----; LI033-154----) concentrated in the S half of Derk townland. Not depicted on historic OSi maps. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 75; AP 4/3626) as a series of rectilinear enclosures. Visible as a pattern of rectilinear cropmarks, some perpendicular to each, located within four fields (400m NW-SE x 250m NE-SW) visible on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/09/2020. Linear cropmarks appear to be the remains of drainage ditches rather than a pre-1700 field system.   Description

  Detached square-plan five-bay two-storey country house, built c. 1770, with hipped slate roof with brick chimneystacks. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed openings having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows and limestone sills. Render architrave to first floor, centre bay. Square-headed opening to south elevation, first floor, centre bay with six-over-six pane timber sliding wash window with flanking two-over-two pane windows. Round-headed opening having render surround comprising Ionic style engaged columns with scrolled consoles supporting architrave. Spoked fanlight over timber panelled door with flanking sidelights and Ionic style engaged columns. Gable-fronted two-bay single-storey gate lodge to south-east having extensions to rear. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystack. Rusticated limestone walls with roughcast rendered walls to gable apex. Square-headed openings having timber casement windows. Recessed opening with timber panelled door. Pair of lined-and-ruled rendered square-profile piers with carved limestone caps, double-leaf cast-iron gates and flanking square-headed pedestrian entrances having limestone copings, single-leaf cast-iron gates terminating in second pair of piers. Roughcast rendered walls with limestone copings terminating in pair of square-profile limestone piers having carved caps.

• Derk Cottage, house, 1790–1810 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c. 1800, with recent single-bay single-storey porch to front (south) elevation and single-bay single-storey extension to rear (north) elevation. Hipped slate roof with render over brick chimneystacks. Rendered walls. Square-headed openings having painted stone sills and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed openings to ground floor with tripartite one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows and flanking one-over-one pane windows with painted stone sills. Square-headed opening to porch having timber battened door. Pointed arch opening to west elevation having brick voussoirs and single-leaf cast-iron gate. Render over rubble limestone boundary walls to west with pointed arch opening with timber battened door and limestone steps. Pair of square-profile rendered piers having carved limestone caps, corrugated-iron gate and rendered walls terminating in second pair of piers.
