- LI030-055 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, the N, W and SE side of the monument form the townland boundary with Dollas Lower. The ringfort is one of a series of enclosures (LI030-055/116/058/061----) in an E-W alignment within the townland between 250m and 400m apart. The site is depicted as an enclosure on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map on the summit of a low hill and is later depicted as a scarped enclosure (ext. dims. c. 67m N-S; 72m E-W) surrounded by a fosse on the W and SW side. The ringfort is visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013 as a ringfort surrounded by a fosse with the N, W and SE side incorporated into the modern field boundary. The enclosure is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. A small circular feature is depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map 75m W of the ringfort (LI030-055----), the enclosure appears on aerial orthoimages and may be the remains of a ring-barrow or a natural pond feature. Description
In pasture, atop low rise, immediately NNW of farmyard. Roughly circular area (22m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 0.5m; Wth 6m), but which is overlain by field boundary N->ENE. Band of tall dark grass (Wth c. 2.5m) runs along base of scarp S->N, and probably indicates line of infilled fosse. Break in scarp at N (Wth 3.5m). Description
In potato field, atop low rise in gently undulating terrain. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on 1924 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. Description
In pasture, atop low rise in gently undulating terrain, immediately SE of farmyard. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1841 OS 6-inch map, has been modified to form small paddock attached to farmyard. Now consists of roughly circular area (38m N-S; 39m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.85m) with recent drainage ditch running immediately outside it N->SW, and defined by concrete-block wall SW->N. Gate in block wall gives access to interior; just inside wall to NW is pump house and there is tap on post in centre of enclosure. A hedge has been planted along inside base of enclosing bank NE->SE.
