  Description

  Newcastle Clanwilliam described by Westropp (1906-7, 87) as following; '1583 Castelenoo C[astle], held by W. Bourke, also called "Castellano Trylan" and "Nestermoy" (Des. R., 37; Peyton, 257). 1607 Dom. Roche owned Newcastle-Clanwilliam, meared with the water called Griodane on the west, and the Shannon on the north (Inq. Chan., 2a). 1619 H. Holcroft was granted the C[astle]. and bawn of Newcastle (Pat. R.). 1623 1655 Jordan Roche held it, with fifteen acres of orchard (Inq. Chan. II., C.S. xxix., p. 9), granted to Duke of York, and sold, 1703, to Hollow Blades Company. Fabric - A late peel tower; the west wall and a side turret had fallen before 1840; the latter, it is said, in 1800. It is about 50 feet high [15m], and measures 27½ feet [8.4m] by 21 feet 8 inches [6.6m], with large windows and high gables and chimneys. An improbable tradition makes it the residence of King William during the siege of Limerick (O.S.L., 9, 24)'. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that in 1640 Jordane Roche late of Limerick of held in New Castle a 'castle and fifteen Acres of an Orchard mearing on the North'(Simington 1938, 465). Castle described in 1840 as following; 'in the townland of Newcastle stands on a rock a Castle of the same name. It is all perfect except the west wall which is entirely destroyed. It is fifty seven feet four inches [17.5m] by twenty one feet eight inches [6.6m] and the people assert that it had a square tower at the south west corner which fell, with the west side about forty years since [c. 1800]. The remaining walls are fifty feet [15.25m] high and five feet six inches [1.7m] in thickness, and have windows and apertures for five stories [OSL Parish of Kilmurry'.   Description

  In 1840 the Ordnance Survey Letters recorded that 'The site of the original church of Kilmurry which is in the glebe is occupied by the protestant church which was built abut 40 years ago. There is an old graveyard attached which is still much used' (OSL Vol. 1, 23). Westropp gives the following details on Kilmurry Church; 'A parish in Clanwilliam. Kilmehurrok, 1291, 1302. In 1325 Ade de Gouly and Bichard Perpoint had a suit about Kilmoroke, which Gouly's great-grandfather, Begin Le Flemyng, held (Plea B. 148 of xviii Ed. II.). Kilmurray dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen, 1410; Kilmohurk, alias Kilmurry, held by the Prior of Athissell, 1418. Temple Moyrry, 1586 (Peyton). Kilmeremagdalyn granted to Bart. Cusack, 1551 (Fiant, 744) ; Killingally, alias Kilmahallock, held by Bishop of Killaloe, 1633 ; Kilmury, D. S. (A) 1 and 4. Site - The modern I.   19th century Kilmurry C. of I. church standing on site of medieval church (LI005-026001-) in W quadrant of graveyard which has been extended to the E. On the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map the graveyard consisted of a roughly rectangular shaped area (approx. dims. 52m N-S x 68m E-W) enclosed by post-1700 stone wall with entrance gate at W.   Description

  At the S end of Carrowkeel Housing development, 320m S of the R445. Not marked on any of the OS maps. Archaeological testing of a mound of archaeological potential was undertaken by Tracy Collins under licence No. 02E1402. The results were summarised as following; ‘Three trenches were dug by machine. It was quickly realised that the mound was a natural feature. However, in the longest trench a spread of stony burnt material was discovered, along with two circular pits, which were also filled with the burnt material. These features were interpreted as the remains of a burnt mound, perhaps a fulacht fiadh, with two associated pits, which may have functioned as troughs’ (www.excavations.ie 2002:1145; Collins 2002). The burnt stone material was recorded for a length of 24m N-S while the associated pits were 1m in diameter. Compiled by Martin Fitzpatrick Date upload 15 June 2020

Pitched slate roof to with limestone copings, eaves course and cast-iron rainwater goods. Dressed limestone spire to tower with cast-iron weathervane. Rubble limestone walls having cut limestone stringcourses to tower. Pointed arch openings to nave having cut limestone surrounds with inset trefoil-headed lancet stained glass windows.
