  Description

  In woodland on the former demesne of Cahir Guillamore House, 150m SE of the townland boundary with Caherguillamore. Rockbarton House 500m to S. Located in the NE boundary of a field system (LI031-206----), 160m NW of a cashel (LI031-075----). Upstanding monument labelled Site 5 and described by Ó Ríordáin and Hunt (1942, 42) as consisting of the ‘remains of a ruined megalith here, but it is not clear what type of tomb is represented, it appears to have been a " gallery grave," the present length of which is 16’ [4.8m] approximately’. Recorded by Grogan (1989, Vol. 2, 24) as a 'possible wedge-tomb'. The monument is not visible on the OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-12 or Google Earth orthoimages. • LI031-075 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In pasture on the demesne lands of Rockbarton House located 300m to S, 45m NE of the townland boundary with Rockbarton. In the SE quadrant of a field system (LI031-206----), 45m N of prehistoric burial site (LI031-076----) and 160m SE of unclassified megalithic tomb (LI031-074----). Not depicted on OSi maps. Monument described by Ó Ríordáin and Hunt (1942, 42) as follows; ‘Fort 4’, consisting of ‘a large fort with stone banks, about 60 yards [55m] in diameter with what appears to be a house and other features in the interior’. Monument visible as roughly circular shaped area enclosed by a bank with features in the centre on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 20/09/2020. The 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map depicts a field boundary running NW-SE and a second field boundary (running ENE-WSW) in the area of the monument. The field boundaries were not shown on the OSi 25-inch map. These field boundaries are visible on the OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimage dated 20/09/2020. A further field boundary, possibly associated with demesne landscaping is visible on the Google Earth orthoimagery intersecting the cashel at NE.   According to Ó Ríordáin (1942, 42) when the reservoir here was dug around 1910 'extended burials and well as urns were found'.

• LI031-081 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On rough poorly drained pasture, 20m SW of watercourse which forms townland boundary with Grange. The settlement of Grange Upper lies 375m to E and Lough Gur lies 1.2km to ESE. Within a field system (LI032-325----), enclosures (LI032-182001/002-) lie 90m to SE and 135m to E respectively. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as sub-circular shaped area (37m N-S x 34m E-W) defined by a scarp and fosse. Visible on Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 70; AP4/3601) and on oblique aerial photograph (ASIAP 350 13, 14 05/01/2003) as a large sub-circular shaped enclosure, intersected at W and S by linear cropmarks . Monument visible as circular-shaped enclosure on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-2012 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 20/09/2020.   Description

  On flat wet pasture 90m SSE of townland boundary with Rockbarton and Grange, 1.5km WNW of Lough Gur. One of nine ring-barrows and an enclosure (LI031-076001/8- and LI031-177002-) in a ring-barrow cemetery within a 200m radius. The ring-barrow is not depicted on historic OSi maps. It is not visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and is not visible on later Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 35.01: AP 4/3644) as a circular ring-barrow (ext. diam. c. 8m). The ring-barrow is not visible on the Google Earth orthoimage taken 05/04/2006 nor on the most recent Google Earth orthoimage taken 20/09/2020.   Description

  On flat wet pasture 95m SSE of townland boundary with Rockbarton and Grange, 1.5km WNW of Lough Gur. The ring-barrow (LI031-177002-) is one of nine ring-barrows with an enclosure (LI031-076001/8- and LI031-177001-) in a ring-barrow cemetery within a 200m radius. The ring-barrow is not depicted on historic OSi maps. It is visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 but is not visible on the Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 35.02: AP 4/3644) as an oval ring-barrow (ext. dims. c. 10m N-S; 7m E-W). The ring-barrow is faintly visible on the Google Earth orthoimage taken 05/04/2006 but not of the most recent Google Earth orthoimage taken 20/09/2020.   Description

  On a gently E-facing slope of a small knoll 590m W of the townland boundary with Grange and 1.4km W of Lough Gur. Ringfort (LI031-075----) 310m to WSW and the habitation sites at Rockbarton (LI031-080001/003-) are 340m to SSE. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. The settlement earthworks (ext. dims. 18m N-S; 50m E-W) are visible on the OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 69.01-2: AP 4/3601) as an earthwork. The earthworks are visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 25/03/2017 and 24/09/2018. The features may represent the foundations (now grass covered) of a series of small buildings and / enclosures. These buildings may date from the late medieval or early post-medieval period and were out of use and ruinous by the early 19th century. Similar in morphology to the medieval houses (LI031-041007-) at Cahirguillamore.   Description

  On the N-facing slope of a small knoll 15m N of the townland boundary with Rockbarton and 1.9km W of Lough Gur. Ringfort (LI031-075----) 100m to NE and a prehistoric burial site (LI031-076----) lies 90m to ENE. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. The earthworks are not visible on the OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and it is not visible on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 71: AP 4/3601) as an enclosure. The enclosure is not visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 16/03/2016 and 28/06/2018. • LI031-206 Field system
  Description

  On undulating ground occupying the SW corner of Raheen townland, 1.7km W of Lough Gur. Ringfort (LI031-075----) located on the E boundary of the field system. Megalithic tomb (LI031-074----) located on the NE margin of the field system, enclosure (LI031-204----) and prehistoric burials (LI031-076----) are located on the SW margin of the field system. The field boundaries are not depicted on OSi historic maps. The features are visible on the OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and on the Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 72: 4/3600). The field system is visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 05/04/2006; 25/03/2017 and 24/09/2018. The fields appears to overlap above the ringfort enclosure (LI031-075----) suggesting that the final phase of use of the fields post-dates that monument.   Description

  In young forestry, with improved rough, wet pasture to N and E and a watercourse 22m to E which also marks a townland boundary with Grange. The settlement of Grange Upper lies 320m to E and Lough Gur lies 1.2km to ESE. Earthworks (LI032-182002-/325----) lie 50m to ENE and WNW, respectively and enclosure (LI031-081----) lies 90m to NW. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Monument identified as an oval-shaped cropmark by the Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 165: AP 4/3601). Monument is clearly visible as a D-shaped enclosure (85m NE-SW; 65m NW-SE) defined by a scarp from S-W-N-NE and along the straight side by a linear ditch running NE-SW, on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 16/03/2016.
