• LI022-110 Field system
  Description

  A series of linear earthworks forms small rectangular shaped fields to E of Rockstown Castle (LI022-108----) visible on oblique aerial photographs (CUCAP AVT004/005) taken 20/07/1968 possibly represents the remains of a field system associated with Rockstown Castle and church (LI022-109001-) standing to SW of earthworks. • LI023-001 Field system
  Description

  In improved pasture. Aerial photographs taken in 1960s (St Joseph Collection, AVT5 & AVT9) show a possible field system in a substantial sub-rectangular area (dims. c. 450m ENE-WSW; c. 650m NNW-SSE). There was no evident surface trace of this system when the area was inspected except for some slight undulations toward existing E field boundary that have no discernible pattern. Curvilinear coppice, depicted on current edition OS 6-inch map, now evident as an area of rock outcrop. Field boundary defining N-side of general area has been removed; wide earthen field boundary (Wth 5.6m; H 1.45m) aligned with mature trees and outer drain (Wth 6.25m; D 2.05m) forms E-side; third class road (Wth 5.2m) orientated ENE-WSW flanks S-side; townland boundary defines W-side. Tower house (LI022-108----) adjoins the area to W; church (LI022-109001-) and graveyard (LI022-109002-) c. 100m to W. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 20 November 2011

• LI023-002001 Church
  Description

  In NE quadrant of graveyard (LI023-002002-). Only standing remains of church is stump of wall (L 2.2m at base; max. H c. 3.3m; T 0.8m; long-axis c. N-S) constructed of rubble limestone with evidence of lime mortar. Two putlog holes pierce width of wall. Remains of parish church of Rochestown (Westropp 1904-5, 441-2) which was also a Dominican house though 'probably only a cell or vicariate of Limerick or Kilmallock' (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 228-9). Westropp (1904-5, 441-2) recorded the following details about Riochestown; 'A monastery of Dominicans, often confused with Willestown and Ballymwillin (see 325, 336), or, as Archdall says, of Carmelites (Mon. Hib., p. 432); Rochestown, part of the commandery of Aney, 1578 (Fiant, 3250); Rochestown, formerly part of Ballynumrare parish, 1586 (Peyton); Rochestown Church, in Caherkynlis deanery, 1615; Roachestown, 1655 (D.S. (A 24, Petty, 65); Fabric - The church walls remained, 1826 (Fitzgerald, i., p. 291), but were levelled before 1840. Toberfuaird, or the cold well near it, was supposed to be curative, if not holy. • LI023-002002 Graveyard
  Description

  In level pasture. Rochestown Church ruins (LI023-002001-) in centre of trapezoidal-shaped graveyard (L 22m at W; L 57m at N; L 34m at E; L 54m at S) enclosed by mortared stone wall. Entrance gate, at E-end of S-wall, of wrought iron flanked by limestone piers. Interior covered by coarse grass. Earliest headstone noted dated 1826. Still in occasional use for burial. Along inside of S wall is linear depression (Wth 5.75m; D on S side 0.85m; D on N side 1.05m). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 30 October 2013.
