Description
In low-lying, wet pasture with restricted to moderate views, c. 22m S of townland boundary with Laskiltagh. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2001 and described as a slightly raised, roughly oval-shaped area (36m E-W; 32m N-S) defined by a low scarp (Wth 2.5m; H 0.5m) visible intermittently from SE-S-W-N-NE, defined by a field boundary from NE-E-SE. The interior is gently undulating, dry and clear of vegetation. According to local information, the monument was levelled in the 1960s. Monument is visible as a faint oval-shaped cropmark on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimagestaken 28/06/2018. - LI030-026 Ritual site - holy well
Description
Holy well described by Ó Danachair as following; 'Lady's Well on 1840 map. The well is now enclosed in a concrete tank, overflowing into a basin. Two boulders, said to bear the marks of Our Lady's hands, are shown as the former site of the well. "This well is called Lady Well. It is said to possess healing virtues. There is a pattern held here on the 15th August at which people assemble from all parts". OSNB. The pattern was discontinued about 1880, but the 15th of August is still a day. of devotion, and the well is decorated with statues, flowers and lighted candles. The water cures sore eyes. Rounds are also made at other times. Legends: The well moved across the river when profaned by washing clothes in it; it was brought back by the prayers of a holy priest. A man caught the trout which lived in the well; he died in the lunatic asylum' (Ó Danachair 1955, 210). - LI030-027 Designed landscape feature
Description
Archaeological testing by Frank Coyne (12E0304) revealed this feature to be a 19th century paddock and not archaeological in nature (Coyne 2012).
- LI030-131 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
In pasture, 30m NE of a millrace associated with the saw mill at Caherass House, which lies 700m to NW and 100m NE of the River Maigue which also marks a townland boundary with Croom. Not depicted on OSI historic maps. Identified by Celie O’Rahilly, Limerick County Archaeologist as a possible enclosure which was described as: ‘A very faint trace of a circular area (approx. diam. 22m) which is defined more by a central hollow than a definite raised bank’. During a geophysical survey carried out in advance of the Adare Bypass, only traces of ridge-and-furrow cultivation and possible small iron objects were revealed. The presence of the cultivation features and a shallow, narrow drain were confirmed on further investigation (Licence No. 97E0405), however no diagnostic material was recovered from any of the cuttings. This site has been fully investigated and now lies under the route of the Adare Bypass, as can be seen on Google Earth orthoimages dated 28/06/2018.
