• LF010-139 Burnt mound
  Description

  The remains of a low mound (dims. 9m N–S by 11.2m E–W) were exposed in the course of monitoring an afforestation project. It consisted of a burnt layer of blackened soil and head-shattered stones (30mm – 130mm thick) that was visible below the peaty topsoil, 0.09m – 0.20m below the ground surface (pers. comm. • LF011-001 Moated site
  Description

  Within a hollow on a NE-facing slope in pasture. A raised subcircular area (36m N-S; 31m E-W) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 7m; H 0.75-1.65m) with an external fosse (Wth 7m; D 0.5-1.5m), which is fed by a small stream adjacent to the S. There is evidence of stone-facing on the inner face of the bank. A break (Wth 3m) at NE probably marks the original entrance. The broad stream-fed fosse at this monument and its location in a hollow suggest the possibility that it is a moated site. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 3 May 2012

  Description

  On a slight slope in farmland. Not indicated on the 1837 or 1887 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. An upright stone (H 1m), aligned approximately E-W, stands 2.5m E of two prostrate slabs, the larger almost 2m in maximum dimension. Although not included by de Valera and Ó Nualláin (1972, 89) in their main list these three stones might be the last vestiges of a megalithic tomb.   Description

  On a gentle E-facing slope. A raised roughly oval area (33.5m NNW-SSE; 29.5m ENE-WSW) enclosed from E-S-SSW by a scarp (H 1.2m). Elsewhere the perimeter has been modified and incorporated into a field boundary. There is no trace of a fosse. A depression (Wth 3.2m) in the scarp at E may mark the original entrance.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey vernacular house, built c. 1820, having projecting gable-fronted porch addition to the centre of the front façade (east). Single-bay single-storey addition and two-storey outbuilding attached to the north end. Hipped natural slate roof with central pair of rendered chimneystacks. Pitched natural slate roof to porch with remains of carved timber bargeboard. Lime rendered walls, over rubble stone construction, with cement rendered finish to porch. Square-headed window openings with one-over-one timber sliding sash windows and rendered sills to first floor, two-over-two timber sliding sash windows and tooled cut limestone sills to ground floor. Blank façade to rear at first floor level. Square-headed door opening to porch with timber battened door and plain overlight. Attached outbuildings to north having pitched corrugated-metal roof and lime rendered random rubble limestone walls. Road-fronted with yard to the rear (west). Located to the north of Granard.
