• LF019-068001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On an ENE-facing slope in pasture. An extensive plantation of mature deciduous trees lies immediately to the W. A raised roughly oval area (c. 40m N-S; c. 35m E-W) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.4m; H 0.4m) with a shallow external fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.35m). A short segment of the bank has been removed at NE, and from SSW-SW-W both the bank and fosse have been removed and replaced by a modern field boundary. A poorly defined break (Wth 2.9m) in the bank at E with fragmentary traces of a possible accompanying causeway may mark the original entrance. A bullaun stone (LF019-068005-) lies c. 4m to the ESE, while a short distance to the SW there is another bullaun stone (LF019-068002-). A ring-barrow (LF019-068003-) lies c. 25m to the SSW.   Description

  Within a plantation of coniferous trees, c. 12m to the SW of a ringfort (LF019-068001-). An irregularly shaped limestone boulder contains two depressions. One is oval shaped (D 0.7m; 0.35m x 0.24m). The other was apparently originally similar in size but a considerable portion of it has broken off. Compiled by: Patrick F.   Description

  At the edge of a plantation of coniferous trees, c. 25m to the SSW of a rath (LF019-068001-). A low circular mound of earth and stone (diam. at base 6.4m; max. H 0.8m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.2m; H 0.3m) with a wide, shallow internal fosse (Wth 2.2m; D 0.25m). There are causeways across the fosse at NNE, E and SE.   Description

  On a gentle E-facing slope. A raised circular area (diam. c. 20m) defined by a scarp (H 0.45-0.55m). A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a shallow external fosse and noted that the original entrance may have been at SSE.   Description

  A long, rectangular, two-storey house with a tall, roughly centrally located, projecting three-storey tower, is depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) map of Moydow barony (NLI, MS 719). It is possible that the tower represents a medieval castle to which the house (LF019-070003-) was added in the 17th century. The terrier of the Down Survey (1655-6) map of Killglasse parish (ibid.) records that there was a ‘Castle at Drumyn in reasonable repaire with some Cabbins’, the owner of these lands is listed as John Nugent, who is described as an ‘Irish Papist’ (ibid.). The house is named 'Drumming old' on the OS Fair Plan and is depicted as an unroofed rectangular structure aligned NNW-SSE; it may have incorporated the castle.   Description

  In the yard of the now-ruined house named 'Druming Park' on the 1911 OS 25-inch plan. Recorded in 1996 as a circular, bowl-shaped stone (diam. 0.38m; D 0.2m) with a plughole that was sunk into the ground immediately above a modern drain (SMR file).   Description

  A long, rectangular, two-storey house with a tall, roughly centrally located, projecting three-storey tower is depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) map of Moydow barony (NLI, MS 719). It is possible that the tower represents an earlier castle (LF019-070001-) and that the house was subsequently added in the 17th century. The house may be that noted by Nicholas Dowdall in 1682 as that of ‘John Kerr Dean of Ardagh' who 'built a fair house at Druing’ (Gillespie and Moran 1991, 210). The house is named 'Drumming old' on the OS Fair Plan and is depicted as an unroofed rectangular structure aligned NNW-SSE.   Description

  On a gentle SE-facing slope in pasture. A report in 1976 (SMR file) noted that this raised subcircular area (c. 44m N-S; c. 38m E-W) was enclosed by a bank of earth and stone, a fosse and a low outer bank. It is defined by a scarp (H 1m) at the base of which, from NW-N-SE, is a shallow external fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.2-0.4m). The outer bank has since been levelled.   On a NW-facing slope in pasture. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded that the outline of a bank and external fosse could still be traced enclosing a circular area (diam. c. 33m).   Description

  On a low rise in pasture. Depicted as a circular enclosure with the designation 'Forts' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. A slightly raised, almost circular area (c. 27m N-S; c. 26m E-W) defined by a bank of earth and stone and an external fosse from SE-S-NNW. The bank is incorporated into a later field boundary and as a result both it and the fosse have been extensively modified. Elsewhere the enclosing elements have been levelled.   Description

  On a low rise in pasture. A raised circular area (diam. c. 26m) enclosed at NW by the remains of a bank of earth and stone (Wth 1.7-1.8m; H 0.2m) and elsewhere defined by a scarp (H 1.2-2m). A shallow intervening fosse (Wth c. 2.5m; D 0.25m) and an outer bank (Wth 2.2m; H 0.2m) are evident except at N where there is a steep, naturally occurring slope.   Description

  On a gentle E-facing slope in pasture. A slightly raised circular area (diam. c. 45m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.2-3.4m; H 0.3-0.75m) with traces of external drystone-walling. A report in 1976 (SMR file) noted the following features: an external fosse, a possible original entrance at NE, and within the interior, two house sites (LF019-077003-; LF019-077004-) and a souterrain (LF 019-077002-).   Description

  Within the N half of a rath (LF019-077001-). A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded an opening to a collapsed souterrain that was filled up with bushes, briars, stones and other debris.   Within the centre of the interior of a rath (LF019-077001-). A report in 1976 (SMR file) noted the remains of a stony enclosure that was possibly a large house.
