  Description

  On a gentle NE-facing slope in pasture. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a raised circular area (diam. c. 34m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone with a shallow intervening fosse and traces of an outer bank. The original entrance was not recognisable. The monument has been levelled but is visible as a cropmark on an OSI aerial photograph (SMR file). Compiled by: Patrick F. A raised circular area (diam. 28.3m) enclosed from S-N-NE by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 2.4m; H 0.2m) that has been modified and incorporated into a field boundary.   Description

  In level, poorly drained pasture. A grass-covered, almost circular, low mound (c. 11.8m E–W; 11.5m N–S; H c. 0.5-0.85m) composed of fragments of burnt stone within a matrix of blackened soil. • LF026-040 Ecclesiastical site
  Description

  On top of a hillock, c. 90m to the N of the county boundary with Westmeath, overlooking the Tang River to the S. A large building is depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Abbeyshrule (NLI, MS 719) on the N bank of the river and to the NW of a bridge (LF026-028----). It may correspond with the 'antient [sic] ruins known as the Friary' that were mentioned in correspondence with the NMI (Topgr. file) in 1953 and which had been held in reverence by the previous generation. When an animal was being buried in the field a skeleton was uncovered and locally it was believed to mark the 'graveyard of the monastery' (ibid.). Further burials (LF026-031----) were uncovered during land-reclamation works in 1960 in two distinct areas (Cahill and Sikora 2011, ii, 495). The field is still known locally as the Friary field (pers. comm. Ray O'Connor), however, no visible surface traces any building are evident. It is believed that members of the Franciscan community in Athlone, county Westmeath gathered up the skeletal remains and reinterred them in Athlone (ibid.).   Description

  On a rise in low-lying pasture. A report in 1976 (SMR file) indicates that this raised circular area (diam. c. 50m) was defined by a low bank of earth and stone, an intervening fosse and a short segment of an outer bank at SW. There was a possible house site (LF027-015002-) within the interior at SW. The rath is now defined by a scarp (H 1-1.3m), which is partially levelled at E. The original entrance is not recognisable.   Description

  On a rise in undulating pasture. A raised circular area (diam. 30m) enclosed by fragmentary remains of a bank of earth and stone (Wth 1.4-2.2m; H 0.2-0.4m). A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded an external fosse, which has since been infilled. The original entrance is not recognisable. The ground level rises appreciably from the perimeter towards the centre of the interior. Deciduous trees are growing on the bank.   At the base of a gentle NE-facing slope at the edge of the flood-plain of the Inny River. A low, irregularly shaped, grass-covered mound (6m NW-SE; c. 6m NE-SW; H 0.1-0.3m), which is poorly defined at SW. Burnt stone is exposed.   Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c. 1800, having two-bay single-storey addition to the northeast gable end, built c. 1860. Now disused. Pitched corrugated-metal roof with two rendered chimneystacks to main body of building, one to the northeast gable end and one close to the southwest gable end, and a rendered chimneystack to the northeast gable end of two-bay addition. Raised rendered verges to gable ends of main body of building. Pebbledashed walls, roughcast rendered to the northeast gable end, over rubble stone construction. Square-headed openings having six-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows with painted limestone sills. Square-headed window openings to extension having two-over-two timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door openings with timber battened doors. Set back from road in own grounds to the southwest of Ballymahon, aligned at a right-angle to the road alignment. Multiple-bay single-storey outbuildings to west and south having pitched corrugated-metal roofs, rubble stone walls and square-headed openings with timber sash windows and battened timber doors. Ruinous single-storey houses or outbuildings to site. Rubble limestone boundary walls to road-frontage to east, and to site. Gateway to the east comprising a pair of rendered rubble stone gate piers (on circular-plan) having rendered caps and wrought-iron flat bar gate. Gateway to the south comprising a rubble stone gate pier (on circular-plan) having a wrought-iron flat bar gate. Wrought-iron flat bar gates to site.

  Description

  Vernacular field gate, erected c. 1875, comprising a pair of dressed limestone gate posts (on square-plan) and a pair of wrought-iron flat-bar gates with curved wrought-iron latch. Located adjacent to rural road to the southwest of Ballymahon, and a short distance to the southeast of Shrule Mills (13402612).

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1880, having single-bay single-storey entrance porch to the centre of the front elevation (north) and incorporating multiple-bay two-storey house/outbuilding, built c. 1800, to rear (south). Hipped natural slate roof with a central pair of rendered chimneystacks having terracotta pots, red brick eaves course and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Hipped natural slate roof to porch having red brick eaves course. Pitched and hipped artificial slate roof to section at rear. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls over dressed limestone plinth course with brick strip quoins to the corners of the front elevation (north) of main block having recessed smooth rendered rectangular panels. Flush brick string course at first floor sill level. Moulded smooth rendered detailing to porch with flush brick quoins to the corners. Segmental-headed window openings with tooled cut limestone sills, painted brick surrounds and replacement sliding sash windows. Square-headed opening to rear elevation of block to rear having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window. Segmental-headed door opening to front face of porch (north) having painted brick surrounds with moulded rendered detailing to exterior, timber panelled door flanked by timber panels, and having spoked fanlight over. Timber window shutters visible to interior. Set back from road in extensive mature grounds to the southeast of Ballymahon. Detached single-storey outbuildings to east of house having roughcast rendered random rubble limestone construction and having corrugated-metal roofs, pitched to one outbuilding and flat to the other. Detached multiple-bay two-storey outbuilding to south of house having roughcast rendered finish over random rubble limestone construction; pitched corrugated-(asbestos cement?) roof with raised rendered verges to gable ends; square-headed window openings with brick surrounds and remains of timber sash windows to ground floor and timber battened loading bays at first floor level; square-headed door opening with brick surround and timber battened door; and segmental-headed carriage arch with brick voussoirs and corrugated-metal double-doors. Ruinous structure to the south of house having rubble limestone walls and blocked square-headed and round-headed openings with brick surrounds and voussoirs. Rubble limestone boundary walls to site, that to southeast of house having integral square-headed pedestrian entrance. Section of rendered brick boundary wall to the east of house having integral segmental-headed pedestrian entrance with wrought-iron gate. Walled garden on rectangular-plan to west/northwest of site having random rubble limestone boundary walls having gateway to southeast having rubble stone gate piers and a pair of hooped wrought-iron gates, and integral pedestrian entrance to west side having wrought-iron gate. Cast-iron water pump to east side of walled garden, abutting boundary wall. Main entrance gate to the north of house having a pair of rebuilt rubble stone gate piers (on square-plan) having a pair of cast-iron gates. Long approach avenue to house from the north.
