  Description

  Located on the E bank of a N-S meandering section of the River Dee or White River. Although Bridget is descended from a section of the Fothairt people known as Uí Bhreasail, who were probably based in Offaly, the many medieval lives of the saint associated her with Faughart in Co. Louth (Ó Riain 2011, 123). Many of these relate the story of how, in order to avoid the attentions of men and pursue a religious life she gouged out her own eyes. In her blind wanderings she washed here face at a well in Lann Leire (Dunleer) that was ever afterwards known as Tobar Brighide, St. Bridget’s Well. Although it had been closed about thirty years by then, the first notice of it in the Ordinance Survey Letters (1836) records its position as in Dunleer ‘about 5 perches E of the road to Drogheda’ (Herity 2012, 261), and local memory had always placed it on the E bank of the river. In 1953 the local school teacher, Joseph Sharkey, identified it when it was described as just a few stones covered in mud from the river (Coyle 1954, 1956, 192-4).   Description

  Single-span road-over-river bridge, built c. 1840. Squared-and-snecked rubble stone spandrels and parapets, tooled ashlar string at deck level and chamfered square copings to parapet. Engaged rock-faced ashlar piers, hipped cap stones. Segmental-headed arch, rock-face voussoir stones, bitmac double carriageway, concrete pedestrian footpath to north. Spans White River on approach to railway station to east of town.

  Description

  Detached multiple-bay single-storey brick former railway station, built 1881, no longer in use. Rectangular-plan, gable-fronted timber porch to west, projecting flat-roofed canopy on cast-iron brackets, painted timber vertically hung pierced panels. Pitched slate roof, ridge tiles missing, red brick corbelled chimneystacks, painted timber fascia boards, cast-iron rainwater goods, timber bargeboards pierced and fretted to gables. Banded polychromatic brick walling, projecting plinth, chamfered yellow brick plinth course. Camber-headed window openings, continuous yellow brick hood moulding, limestone sills, windows now bricked-up. Camber-headed door opening, yellow brick door head. Sited next to former station master's house, at end of lane running from town of Dunleer.

  Description

  Detached two-bay single-storey railway goods shed, built c. 1880, no longer in use. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, cast-iron rainwater goods. Coursed rubble limestone walling to west, squared-and-snecked to north, rock-face roughly squared quoins. Segmental-headed window openings, red brick voussoirs, block-and-start surrounds, concrete sills, painted timber frames. Segmental-headed door opening, red brick voussoirs, block-and-start surround, concrete block infill, segmental-headed carriage arch to north, red brick voussoirs, rock-face quoins, concrete block infill. Located to south of station yard palisade fencing to north-west.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1890. Pitched slate roof, stone ridge tiles, unpainted roughcast corbelled chimneystacks and smooth rendered corners, moulded cast-iron gutters, circular downpipes. Painted roughcast rendered walling, smooth rendered plinth, string course at first floor, straight quoins. Square-headed window openings, painted smooth rendered slightly-projecting reveals, painted tooled stone sills, painted timber two-over-two sliding sash windows. Segmental-headed door opening, smooth rendered slightly projecting reveals, hardwood timber and glass panelled door plain glazed fanlight. Set back from street garden to south, low level rendered boundary wall, chamfered cap stones, hooped wrought-iron railing and gate, roughcast rendered walling, smooth margins to east and west.
