  Description

  Marked on the 1912 'OS 6-inch' map as 'St. Dennis's Stone'. According to a note in the SMR file (dated 18 July 1964), it was moved from location marked on 1912 map and placed over St. Dennis's well (LH022-005001-) and it was described as rectangular in shape with a very even surface.   Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Also known as Kellystown or Calliaghtown, and the name might suggest a nunnery or convent. According to Gwynn and Hadcock (1988, 324), shortly after 1507 nuns moved from Termonfeckin to Calliaghtown. (See also LH022-041016-). There is an area of rock outcrop on the N side of the road from Callystown to Clogher which according to local tradition is called 'Knocks' and was the site of the convent. (CLAJ 1930, 184; Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 318, 324)

  Description

  Located towards the bottom of a steep N-facing slope. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) defined by a sinlge fosse feature with a wide entrance gap (Wth c. 10m) at E is visible on the OSI aerial images (1995).   Detached three-bay single-storey thatched house, built c. 1800. Lobby entry, slightly protruding porch to south (main) elevation. Pitched straw thatched roof, scalloped around dormer windows, concrete skews to gables, felt ridge covering, painted smooth rendered corbelled chimneystacks to centre and east end of ridge with mortar aprons, single pitch lean-to roof to porch. Limewashed lime-rendered rubble walling. Square-headed window openings to ground floor, painted smooth rendered reveals, painted stone sills, painted timber casement windows; smaller dormer windows above, let into main elevation wall, painted smooth rendered reveals, painted stone sills, thatch hoods, painted timber casement windows. Square-headed door opening, timber lintel, limewashed smooth rendered reveals, painted vertically-sheeted timber half-door. Bounded by limewashed rubble stone wall, painted timber gate, front house garden; outbuilding to south-west, single-pitch corrugated-iron roof, square-headed door openings to south and east elevations with vertically-sheeted timber doors; continuous roofline with property to east.

  Detached three-bay single-storey thatched house, built c. 1800. Lobby entry, linear plan, outbuilding to south-west, projecting porch with rounded corners. Pitched straw thatched roof to main building and outbuilding, scalloped at raised ridge and eaves, painted smooth rendered brick chimneystack in centre of main ridge with mortar apron, porch within main thatch roofing. Limewashed smooth rendered walling. Square-headed window openings to south elevation, painted timber four pane casements, horizontal wrought-iron bars. Square-headed door opening, painted timber vertically-sheeted door. Set back from road, bounded by partially painted concrete block wall with saddle-back coping, concrete block piers, shallow pyramidal caps, painted cast-iron gate.

Pitched straw thatched roof, painted mortar skews, painted ridge capping to main house and outbuilding, centrally-positioned smooth rendered chimneystack with painted mortar aprons; gable-fronted pitched artificial slate roof to porch, clay roll-top ridge tiles, painted scalloped bargeboard. Limewashed smooth rendered walling, unpainted smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling to porch. Square-headed window openings, painted smooth rendered reveals and soffits, painted timber one-over-one sliding sash windows, painted sills to ground floor, no sills to first floor. Basket arch-headed door opening to porch, painted timber vertically-sheeted door; square-headed door opening to west elevation of outbuilding, painted timber vertically-sheeted door. Ruin of original house to north of house, limewashed stone walling, remains of front doorway to south elevation. Bounded at main elevation and sides by limewashed dry stone walling, segmental mortar coping, two limewashed stone piers with shallow diamond caps and wooden gate, garden to front, painted wrought-iron gate at north-east corner of site flanked by limewashed piers capped by vertical slates, stile with limestone steps around north pier, lawn to rear. Facing small country road, sea to south, surrounded by farmland.

  Terraced four-bay two-storey thatched house, built c. 1800. Lobby entry with slightly projecting porch to centre of west elevation, attached to outbuilding east by flat-roofed extension. Pitched thatched roof of Polish straw, mortar skews, scalloped ridges to main house and outbuilding, unpainted partially rendered red brick corbelled chimneystack to centre of ridge to main house, tall unpainted red brick corbelled chimneystack to outbuilding gable, evidence of pegs under eaves; gable-fronted pitched artificial slate roof to porch and extension. Painted smooth rendered walling to all but east elevation of outbuilding. Square-headed window opening, unpainted smooth rendered reveals and soffits, unpainted stone sills to ground floor, painted timber one-over-one sliding sash windows. Square-headed door opening set under elliptical-headed recess to west elevation of porch, painted timber vertically-sheeted door. Set back from road, unpainted random rubble boundary wall, slate coping, overgrown garden to front, rear looks out over beach, fields to north.

• Saint Michael's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1860–1870 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding gable-fronted Roman Catholic church, dated 1865. Chancel to north, flat-roofed extension to north, raised gable-fronted porch, dated 2000. Pitched slate roofs, clay ridge cresting, tooled limestone verge coping, limestone ashlar pedimented bellcote to south gable with copper bell, wrought-iron cross finial, moulded cast-iron gutters on corbels, square-profile gutters with decorative lugs. Random rubble stone walling, battered plinth, stepped angle buttresses with gablets to south corners, tooled stone plinth coping and hood moulding to south, vents to east and west plinths; plaque to west, hood moulding with label stops, inscription "THE FIRST STONE OF THIS CHURCH WAS LAID BY THE REVD RICHARD EVERARD PP 25TH JUNE A.D. 1865"; wooden cross to west with inscription "MISSON OF THE OBLATE FATHERS OF MARY IMMACULATE, SEPTEMBER 1872"; brick walling to extension. Pointed arch window openings, tooled limestone surrounds and sills, stained glass leaded lights; geometrical tracery north window; pointed arch window to south currently blocked; pointed arch windows to porch. Pointed arch door openings, tooled limestone surrounds, painted timber diagonally-sheeted double doors, decorative wrought-iron brackets, timber double doors to porch; Tudor arched door opening to west, dressed limestone surround, painted timber sheeted door with two glazed lights. Interior with stations of the cross, encaustic tiling between piers, carpeted elsewhere, painted smooth rendered walling with varnished timber wainscoting to east and west, pointed arch stained glass windows to east, west and north wall of chancel, timber trussed roof. Corner-sited, stone grotto to south-east, small graveyard and carpark to west; random rubble boundary wall, pyramidal stone coping; plinth wall to south, segmental coping, cast-iron railings, cast-iron gate piers and gates.
