  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Rectangular structure (max. dims. 17.1m by 5.1m), nave and chancel divided by pointed chancel arch. Door in W wall with two light window overhead. Church does not appear to be older than 1622 and was added to in c. 1692. (CLAJ 1943, 203).

• Saint Michael's Church (Charlestown), church/chapel, 1825–1830 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Church of Ireland church, built 1828, no longer in use. Three-bays to nave, projecting single-bay gable-fronted chancel to east and square-plan three-stage bell tower, terminating in octagonal spire to west. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, ashlar limestone chimneystack with clay pot to west gable of nave; cut limestone fractables, profiled cast-iron gutters supported on corbelled eaves course, circular cast-iron downpipes. Random rubble stone walling, ashlar limestone diagonal buttresses terminating in gabled pinnacles, plinth and string courses to tower; roughcast-render to east elevation and west elevation of tower; engraved date plaque and cast-iron clock to tower. Pointed arch lancet window openings to nave, limestone tracery, chamfered reveals and hood-moulding, leaded diamond-paned stained glass lights, large pointed arch limestone traceried window to east elevation, louvred timber grills to bell chamber, oculus window opening with ashlar limestone surround and hood-moulding to second stage of tower (west). Pointed arch door opening to tower (north), chamfered ashlar limestone reveals, carved hood-moulding, limestone step, painted timber panelled double doors. Church set back from road in own grounds, cut stone grave markers to west, wrought-iron boundary railings on limestone plinth to north; wrought-iron gates and cut limestone runners for opening mechanism, rubble stone boundary walls to east and west.

  Description

  Stone memorial gateway, dated 1919, leading to graveyard to south. Ashlar limestone walling, central four-centred arched opening flanked by lower side bays, vertical bay divisions marked by projecting square-profile decorative piers with lion head motifs, ball finials to outer piers, four-sided pinnacles to inner piers; date plaque to central keystone "1919", carved limestone cross surmounts central-bay, wrought- and cast-iron gates to opening. Central plaque bears the dedication "THIS GATEWAY HAS BEEN ERECTED IN LOVING MEMORY OF WILLIAM DE SALIS FILGATE OF LISRENNY, WHO HELD OFFICE AS VICAR'S WARDEN AT CHARLESTOWN CHURCH FOR A PERIOD OF NEARLY 50 YEARS […] BORN DECEMBER 2ND 1834, DIED JUNE 14TH 1916". Entrance situated on south side of roadway giving access to graveyard to south, flanked by rubble masonry quadrant walls, rendered coping to east and west.
