• LH011-096 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Well preserved, still occupied, and constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble and greywacke. It is four storeys high with a projecting round tower at the N angle and an almost square one at the W which projects northwards only. The original ground-floor entrance was through the N end of the SW wall, close to the angle-tower which gave access to a NE-SW barrel-vaulted area and the stairwell. The W corner-tower is now completely blocked and much altered, being divided into separate chambers and showing no evidence of the original steps. The N angle-tower has four floor levels, each with a beehive-vaulted roof of limestone slabs. This must have been the garderobe tower but there is no visible evidence for the chutes. The interior of the main building has been somewhat altered and a large central staircase has been inserted. A porch has been added to the NE end of the SE wall and a modern house abuts the NE side. Modern windows have been inserted, especially in the SE wall, and the top of the building has had crenellations added in comparatively recent times. Original slit opes still exist in the N faces of the angle-towers. The S angle, especially at the S wall, has a pronounced batter. The castle occupies the NW side of a bawn (LH011-096001-), of which nothing else remains except the gatehouse (LH011-096002-).   Description

  Built of roughly coursed limestone blocks and greywacke; undivided nave and chancel (int. dims. c. 23m by c. 4.15m, Wth of walls c. 0.9m). In a poor state of preservation with part of W wall collapsed and large areas of S and N walls totally destroyed. E gable window splayed and built of undressed limestone on the outside, while inner face has been robbed of its moulded or dressed stone. Gaps in N and S walls at W ends may represent opposing doorways. It would appear from the type of stonework and the positions of the opposing doorways that this is a late medieval church. A piece of dressed sandstone with diagonal tooling, indicating a twelfth- or thirteenth-century date, was found on the rubble of the destroyed N wall, but is hardly from the present structure.   Description

  Detached four-storey former tower house, built c. 1500, now in use as house. Square-plan with projecting round tower at north-east angle and square tower at north-west angle, adjoining two-storey dwelling house, built c. 1820, to east, various attached outbuildings and stables, two-storey box bay to east of south (main) elevation of tower. Roof to tower hidden by crenellated parapet, pitched slate roof to dwelling house, clay ridge tiles, painted smooth rendered flat-capped chimneystack to east gable, moulded uPVC gutters and downpipe. Coursed random rubble walling, projecting slight abutment to south-west corner, unpainted roughcast parapet wall with square crenellations and concrete caps, concrete string courses, concrete pediment headed parapet walling to bay, concrete coping with emblem on front. Square-headed window openings, unpainted moulded stone slightly projecting reveals and soffits, evidence of various block in window openings with painted and other red brick arch headings, splayed red brick window headings and red block-and-start surrounds, painted stone sills, various uPVC casement windows, one painted timber replacement casement window, one painted three-over-six timber replacement sliding sash window to bay; tooled stone headed painted timber replacement window to west elevation, slit window openings to towers. Square-headed door opening to bay, stone plinth blocks, unpainted tooled stone surround, timber replacement panelled door, round-headed door opening to west elevation, tooled stone surround, painted vertically-sheeted timber replacement door. Various outbuildings of similar style to house, some reroofed with artificial slate all sand-blasted and some repointed. Medieval remains of gateway with replacement iron gate, gardens and fields surrounding dwelling, set back from road driveway entrance to which is coursed random rubble walling with square stone coping square squared-and-snecked piers flanking gate, all replacement.

  Description

  Detached six-bay single-storey school, built c. 1940. Rectangular-plan, flat-roofed three-bay entrance blocks to east and west, extension currently under construction to north. Hipped slate roof, clay ridge tiles, red brick stone corbelled chimneystack, moulded cast-iron gutters on rendered corbelled eaves course, circular cast-iron downpipes some with decorative hoppers. Rock-faced squared-and-snecked granite walling, red brick quoins, smooth rendered plinth. Tripartite square-headed window openings, red brick reveals, tooled granite lintels and sills, uPVC windows. Square-headed door openings, red brick reveals, tooled granite lintel, painted timber and glazed vertically-sheeted door, tooled granite threshold, concrete step. School set in own grounds, surrounded by hard and soft landscaping, bounded by dry-stone wall and wire fence, ashlar granite piers, pyramidal caps, plaques to piers "Merces Nostra Scientia Darver - 1940" , wrought-iron gates, kissing-gate to south-west; brick piers, wrought-iron gate accessed church yard to east.
