• LH014-049 Castle - motte
  Description

  Situated on a long broad ridge just W of Drumcashel House and consisting of a circular flat-topped mound (diam. of summit c. 10.6m, H 6-8m) with a large berm or terrace (Wth 7.7m, H 3.5-4m) at mid-height surrounding it. The berm may be due to landscaping since there are ramp-like features adjoining it at the W and because of its proximity to Drumcashel House. Alternatively, an earlier site such as a raised rath may have been there and the motte has been built on top of this. There is no easy access to the summit and this would lend more weight to the latter interpretation. • LH014-097 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Located at the crest of the S-facing slope of an E-W ridge towards its E end. The cropmark of a large subcircular enclosure (dims c. 100m N-S; c. 80m E-W) defined by a wide fosse feature (Wth c. 5-10m) is visible on Google Earth (19/04/2011; 27/04/2011) and OSI aerial images (1995, 2017). It was on the demesne of Drumcashel House, which was c. 60m to the S, and the motte (LH014-049----) is c. 100m to the NW. It was first reported by Anthony Murphy. • LH014-100 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a rise on a NE-facing slope. The faint cropmark of a D-shaped enclosure (dims c. 50m N-S; c. 45m E-W) defined by a single feature that might be an earthen bank is visible on Google Earth (05/10/2009). It is also faintly visible on Google Earth (27/05/2019) and was first reported by Jean Charles Caillere. • LH014-101 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Located on a N-facing slope overlooking the valley of the W-E Glyde River, and clearly visible on Google Earth (21/07/2021). The cropmark of a large subcircular enclosure (dims c. 85m E-W; c. 75m N-S) defined by a continuous fosse can be traced WSW-N-ESE. It is cut by an E-W field bank S of the centre and is not visible in the crop S of this feature. A rectangular field (dims c. 90m N-S; c. 35-55m E-W) is attached to the perimeter at N, and a crescent-shaped enclosure (Wth c. 10-20m) is attached outside the defining fosse of the large enclosure SW-N-NE, from where another drain curves out to the N and E (Chord c. 65m E-W). The cropmarks of drains associated with mapped fields can be seen further N. The features were first reported by Anthony Murphy. • LH014-101001 Enclosure
  Description

  Located on a N-facing slope overlooking the valley of the W-E Glyde River, and clearly visible on Google Earth (21/07/2021). The cropmark perimeter of a large crescent-shaped enclosure (Wth c. 10-20m) is attached outside the defining fosse of the large enclosure (LH014-101----) SW-N-NE, from where another drain curves out to the N and E (Chord E-W c. 65m). The long ditches of a rectangular enclosure or field (dims c. 90m N-S; c. 35-55m E-W) are attached to the perimeter of the large enclosure N-NE, largely removing the boundary of the crescent-shaped enclosure. This field fits into a corner of one of the regular rectangular fields recorded on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map, the cropmarks of which can also be seen on the Google image. The enclosures can also be seen faintly on Digital Globe images (2011-13), and they were first reported by Anthony Murphy. • Drumcashel House, country house, 1850–1855 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built 1851, now derelict. Projecting porch to central bay of north (front) elevation, square-profile crenellated tower set back from parapet. Roof hidden behind crenellated parapet, some cast-iron rainwater goods remain. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling, crenellated parapet, random rubble stone tower, stone quoins, some smooth render remaining, crenellated parapet on moulded corbels. Square-headed window openings, tooled limestone sills, red brick surrounds, stone hood-mouldings with label stops, chamfered reveals, limestone lintels to ground floor, windows no longer remain; oculus and arrow loop windows to north elevation of tower. Square-headed door opening to north elevation, set within projecting porch flanked by arrow loop sidelights, chamfered reveals, painted timber panelled door, cast-iron door furniture. Ruined outbuildings to east. House situated within woodland, wheat field to south, derelict gate lodge and cast-iron gates to north-west.

  Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey former gate lodge, built c. 1850, now in use as private house. L-plan, gable-fronted open porch to south, extension to north, gable-fronted porch to south-west. Hipped slate roofs, clay ridge tiles, chimneystack with red brick base and paired square-profiled corbelled flues set diagonally, painted timber bargeboards to projecting eaves supporting cast-iron gutters and circular downpipes. Random rubble uncoursed stone walling, red brick quoins; painted smooth render to north-east elevation. Square-headed window openings, stone sills, red brick dressings, painted timber diamond pane casement windows. Red brick gable-fronted open entrance porch to south elevation, square-headed door opening, painted timber vertically-sheeted double doors. Random rubble stone garage to north-west. House set back form road within own grounds, drive-way to south-west.
