D-shaped area (int. dims. 52m NW-SE, 38m NE-SW) enclosed by earthen bank (Wth 8m, H 0.9m internally, 3.2m externally) with traces of external fosse (Wth 2m, D 0.4m), except along NW to SE side where site is truncated by cliff. Entrance gap (Wth 2m) and causeway at SE. Possible souterrain (LH003-001002-) in interior, to W of centre, leading to the upper edge of the cliff.

In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular area (int. diam. 36m) enclosed by much-degraded earthen bank (Wth c. 5m, H 1.5m internally, 2m externally), best preserved at SE quadrant but elsewhere eroded down to the level of the interior. The bank has been steepened all the way around, and has a modern drystone wall along its W side. No visible trace of fosse. Probable ancient entrance at SSE, represented by a gap (Wth 2m).

In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Sub-circular area (int. dims. 45m N-S, 40.5m E-W) enclosed by two banks with flat intervening space. Inner bank (Wth 4.5m, H 0.8m internally, 2.1m externally), intervening space (Wth 5.5-8.5m) and outer bank (Wth 6.3m; H 1.2m internally, 2.3m externally). Modern erosion has revealed several large stones forming an outer edge to the banks. Entrance gap (Wth 2m) in both banks at SE. Possible souterrain (LH003-004002-) in interior. During a site inspection (28-7-1965) the interior was noted to be divided into quadrants by four slight banks radiating from a slight central mound. These have since been levelled.

  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Situated near summit of a high ridge, with foothills of Slieve Gullion range to N and NE. Granitic boulder (max. dims. H 1.6m, 0.8m by 0.5m in section) orientated roughly NE-SW, with sides tapering gently to a point at top.

  Possible tower house, illustrated by Wright (1758, bk II, pl. 10) as having two square angle-towers and an arched gateway into a bawn (LH003-007002-). It is said to have been an O'Neill castle located at the highest part of the field (Carolan 1912, 19-20). No visible surface trace. • LH004-006001 Church
  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Foundations of a rectangular building (LH004-006001-) of roughly coursed limestone and greywacke (ext. dims. c. 10.1m by c. 6.7m), the remains of which have been repaired and repointed. No architectural features remain, but the use of large limestone blocks in the S wall might suggest an early rather than a late medieval date. A quernstone (LH004-006003-) and bullaun (LH004-006004-) were recorded from the graveyard (LH004-006002-) in 1964 (CLAJ 1964, 349-501, pls 1 and 2) but are no longer visible. A small roughly dressed sandstone slab (LH004-006005-) is to be found W of the church. It has a simple incised Latin cross with T-shaped terminals on its arms and a double circle around the junction of the cross. (PRIA 61C, 118,121)

• Dungooly Bridge, bridge, 1800–1860 · Regional interest
  Description

  Double-span road-over-river stone bridge built c. 1830. Random rubble stone piers, spandrels and parapets, roughly squared rubble V-shaped cutwaters, tooled ashlar caps, rendered limestone half-round coping to parapet. Segmental-headed arches, squared rubble limestone narrow voussoirs, random rubble soffit to vault. Bitumen double carriageway, grass verges. Random rubble, battered retaining wall to south. Spanning River Cully Water, weir to west.

• Dungooly Mill, miller's house, 1840–1855 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached four- or five-bay two-storey miller's house, extant 1855, on an L-shaped plan; single-bay (west) or three-bay (east) two-storey side elevations. Vacant, 2005. Hipped slate roof with ridge tiles, red brick Running bond chimney stacks having paired stringcourses below capping, and remains of cast-iron rainwater goods on red brick header bond stepped eaves. Coursed rubble limestone walls on overgrown plinth with red brick quoins to corners. Square-headed central door opening with overgrown threshold, and red brick block-and-start surround with no fittings surviving. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and red brick block-and-start surrounds framing remains of timber fittings. Set in overgrown grounds with rough cut limestone cylindrical piers to perimeter having rough cut limestone capping.
