  Description

  Situated on a low E-W ridge close to the W bank of the River Glyde and consisting of a roughly circular mound (max. dims at base 29m by 37m, at summit 19.7m by 17m, H 4.5-6.8m) with the remains of a fosse (max. Wth c. 5m) at the S and a much-degraded bailey (max. dims 45m N-S, 30m E-W) at the W defined by scarping which is most pronounced at the N side. The fosse at the S is partly filled by a modern field boundary. There are the possible remains of a fosse at the N side where there is a modern field wall built in it. The top of the motte has been quarried out to a depth of c. 1m at the NNE side. A possible souterrain (LH011-085002-) is thought to be situated on the motte. • LH014-004001 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Located at the W end of a slight rise in a fairly level landscape. The cropmark of an oval enclosure (ext. dims c. 80m E-W; c. 60m N-S) defined by a fosse or ditch is visible on OSI aerial images (2000). There are traces of internal ditches visible in interrupted sections, and much of the interior is occupied by what might be rock outcrop close to the surface. The souterrain (LH014-004----) is c. 30m outside the E boundary of the enclosure at E. It was first reported by Jean Charles Caillere.   Circular graveyard situated on top of hillock. The church, no longer visible, was one of the eight chapels of the Priory of St John at Ardee until the dissolution of the monasteries. • LH014-052 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Incorporated into the fabric of the castellated mansion of Louth Hall. The remains of the earlier building can be seen at the W end of the modern structure, as is evidenced by the slight base batter of the N wall and a blocked doorway at the W end of the N wall which must have given access to the barrel-vaulted area. The remains of the W jamb of this doorway can be clearly seen. There are also punch-dressed quoins in the NW angle. The overall measurements of the tower house are c. 14m E-W by c. 13m N-S based on where there are straight joints and where the base batter terminates.   Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Set in a large flat base almost square in plan and sited on a slight ridge, it is now broken into several fragments. Part of the shaft, which is rectangular in section (0.45m by 0.28m), is still bedded in the base but the other portions lay broken on the ground before being removed for repair by the OPW. Its total height would have been c. 3.1m. The apex of the shaft is broken in two but it can be seen that it tapers towards the top. It bears a rough Crucifixion scene on one face and a robed figure on the other. The head of the cross or pillar takes the form of two truncated pyramids set base to base. The top of the shaft is tenoned to fit a mortise in the head which is decorated with floral patterns and angles. The sides have figures of St Peter and St Patrick under ogee-headed canopies. An inscription in relief covers all four faces of the shaft. The cross is one of a pair of crosses set up by Jennet Dowdall in memory of her second husband, Oliver Plunket, who died in 1607; the other is to be seen at Baronstown, Co.   Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey former school, built 1840, now a community hall. Rectangular block, open bed pedimented breakfront to south, extension to north. Pitched slate roof, crested ridge tiles, red brick chimneystacks, uPVC gutters. Random coursed limestone walling, red brick quoins, rendered c. 1930. Render removed. Smooth rendered walling to north and extension, limestone plaques to south elevation "TALLANSTOWN NATIONAL SCHOOL AD 1840" "FEMALE SCHOOL", "MALE SCHOOL". Square-headed window openings, red brick block-and-start surrounds, tooled limestone sills, painted timber casement windows. Square-headed door openings, red brick block-and-start surrounds, tooled limestone jambs, painted vertically-sheeted timber doors. Corner-sited with soft landscaping to environs, boundary by tooled ashlar plinth surmounted by cast-iron railings, bounded from church yard by rendered walling.

  Description

  Freestanding Roman Catholic church, built c. 1780, originally single-cell, altered to T-plan and Gothic frontispiece added, c. 1830. Sacristy to north. Pitched slate roofs, hidden to south behind crenellated parapet, surmounted by rendered bellcote with cross finial and pinnacles, clay ridge tiles, painted smooth rendered chimneystack to sacristy, rooflights to north, painted stone verge coping to gables capped by pinnacles and cross finials, moulded cast-iron gutters on wrought-iron brackets, circular downpipes with decorative lug. Painted smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling, painted dressed ashlar plinth and pilasters to south. Pointed arch window openings, painted dressed stone sills, chamfered reveals, painted timber tracery and lattice windows, hood moulding to north-east window, stained glass to north, square-headed window openings to sacristy, painted stone sills, painted three-over-three timber sliding sash window. Round-headed door openings to transepts, painted tooled stone surrounds and keystone, painted timber spoked fanlight, painted vertically-sheeted timber doors, four-pointed door opening to east, painted chamfered limestone reveals, painted vertically-sheeted timber doors, square-headed door opening to sacristy, painted vertically-sheeted timber door, tooled limestone step. Full-height interior, carved timber pews, painted timber galleries to east and west transepts, painted carved timber reredos, painted vertically-sheeted ceiling. Church set in yard with hard and soft landscaping, priests' graves and grotto, dated 1988, to west. Red brick parochial house to north-west. Bounded to south by painted rendered plinth surmounted by cast-iron railings, rendered gate piers and cast-iron gates.

  Stone memorial gateway, dated 1868, leading to graveyard to east. Tooled, elaborately carved limestone gates, pointed arch opening in pointed gabled hood, hood-moulding with carved head label-stops, flanked by octagonal pinnacled piers with stone fleur-de-lis finials. Wrought- and cast-iron gate accessed by granite steps. Roughly dressed snecked limestone walling to south and north with projecting plinth, finely tooled crenellated coping. Recessed plaque to north of opening stating "THIS GATEWAY WAS ERECTED IN MEMORY OF THOMAS WILLIAM FILGATE BY THE TENANTS OF THE EXTENSIVE ESTATES UNDER HIS MANAGEMENT AND HIS NUMEROUS FRIENDS TO COMMEMORATE THE MANY GOOD QUALITIES BY WHICH HE WAS ENDEARED TO THEM IN HIS LIFE, DIED 20TH FEBRUARY 1868, AGED 49 YEARS". Gate situated on east of road-way giving access to graveyard.

  Detached multiple-bay two-storey house, built c. 1900. Irregular plan with gable-fronted projections to north-west gable front to north-east, projecting porches to north and south elevations, canted bay to west, lean-to extension to east, cat-slide roof to south and half-dormer to north elevation. Pitched slate roofs, clay ridge tiles, painted smooth rendered corbelled chimneystacks, overhanging eaves with exposed roof beams, profiled cast-iron gutter, hoppers, circular cast-iron downpipes, painted timber and bargeboards, finial to dormer. Painted roughcast-rendered walling, painted smooth rendered ruled-and-lined plinth, painted tooled quoins to angles of porch, north elevation. Square-headed window openings with painted smooth rendered reveals, painted sills, painted timber one-over-one sliding sash windows, uPVC window to canted bay, some replacement timber casement windows to south elevation. Square-headed door opening to north elevation, flanked by plain-glazed fixed sidelights, painted timber vertically-sheeted door set in gable-fronted porch, square-headed door opening to south elevation, timber panelled door set in pitched roof porch with sheeted dog-tooth canopy to gable, square-headed door opening to east of south elevation with painted timber vertically-sheeted door. White-washed rubble walling to south with wrought-iron gate; herringbone dry walling to west with decorative wrought-iron gate. Ranges of white-washed and rubble stone outbuildings to east. House set within own grounds accessed via laneway to west flanked by herringbone dry stone walling; smooth rendered quadrant walls flank squared gate piers surmounted by ball finials and wrought-iron gates.

  Raised curvilinear graveyard, with interments from c. 1600. Enclosed by herringbone dry stone walling, elaborate stone entrance gate to west dated 1868. Range of headstones from unmarked grave markers to Celtic cross style, dating up to 1998. Mausoleum to north-east, keystone dated 1777 and interment date of 1822, undulating ground to interior, no trace of church remains. Fronts onto roadway.

  Detached multiple-bay three-storey Georgian house, built c. 1760, now in ruins. Shallow projecting curved bow to the east of south elevation c. 1805, tower house to west c.1350. House destroyed by fire in 2000. Roof not visible, hidden behind crenellated parapet, remains of red brick corbelled chimneystack to angle of fourteenth-century house and eighteenth-century house, south elevation. Roughcast-rendered over squared coursed rubble stone walling, coping to crenellations. Pointed arch square- and round-headed window openings, tooled limestone sills. Round-headed door opening to north elevation flanked by engaged tooled limestone columns, surmounted by broken pediment and fanlight, painted timber door with ten flat-panels, Plunkett family crest above pediment. House situated within field with ranges of random rubble stone outbuildings to west c. 1805, arranged around three yards; remains of walled garden to west, artificial lake to south, dovecot to south-west. Entrance gates to north-east on roadside comprising tooled limestone squared piers, cast-iron gates, flanked by pedestrian gates and curving quadrant plinth surmounted by cast-iron railings.
